...my parents have landed on either a Mini Cooper...

You have awesome parents.

I would have suggested the VW Rabbit/Golf as well. I looked at one a few years back: Solid little cars that are good on gas. NOt much pep if you get the base engine or load it down, but eh well...

OR, the Pontiac G8. :)

In style car!

I would just get a car that is in style. I mean I am getting my liscence very soon and I am looking into all of this stuff. My advice that I tough my self that I will let everyone know is that I understand that part time mid-wage jobs like what I have do not cover a new car but try to get a car from the same century. A used car from the year 2000 to maybe even up to late 2006 or early 2007 is affordible and has a thing called an air bag. Air bags are important to have as well as newer cars have less of a chance to break down . Just be sure that the car is also good on gas. Gas prices will probaly just get worse. I am a traveler and I want a car that can go for miles without a fill up. :)

Air bags were required (or the manufacturer had the option of using automatic seatbelts, which sucked) for all cars sold in the U.S. since 1989. Dual front air bags were required starting in 1998.

In cars 1989. In "light trucks" 1995.

Wow. Talk your parents into getting a $8 car and letting you invest the rest for 5 yrs... BUT if you HAVE to pick one, my vote is used. Really. For $16k you're options are better in the used market which is a buyers market. A 3 yr old Accord, Altima, etc. is going to be hands down nicer than the stripped down econo box.

Sorry if that was said, this post is getting long.

I was gonna say go with the Cavalier, but since you're 16 and a half, I'll have to change my answer to the Beretta. Wait... do they still make those? Well, they were popular when I was 16 and a half!

I haven't read through the multiple pages here, but I suggest a Volvo 240 from 1976 through 1993. Cheap, easy to maintain, and virtually indestructable.

Not cool or fast, but reliable and functional.

Hey I'm 15 and I'm slated to use ours when I get my license next year. Of course it's got 2 flats. I wonder how much gas it uses.

Get an S80 T6. Twin turbo, 300HP, and easily under $10,000 used.

I always thought those old 240's were neat. They're not flashy or loaded with electronics, but they are safe, reliable, and dependable. I don't see many of them here in Texas, but when I do see them they still look good today.:apple:

And fast if you do them right.

Exhibit A

Yeaaaah. :D

16 1/2 year old + driving = $$$$$ of insurance. I'd look into a car with the best insurance rate for that model. Sports car. New cars cost more to insure.

SmartCar. It's about $10k for the base model, If I recall correctly, and gets solid gas mileage.

i dont know if someone has posted this already, but if you want something that fits your budget and will not blow your gas budget as well, I would reccommend the toyota Yaris. I am getting my learners permit this sunday and my older friend who is a senior drive a black yaris. He gives me rides occasionally and it is really roomy and nice inside, it also handles very smoothly. Great gas mileage too. I would look into the yaris.

My vote, Nissan Versa hatchback. Solid car, not overly powerful but looks decent. Good gas mileage.

And be sure it's a manual. Learn on a stick and be able to drive anything.

Cost almost 10 grand to get fixed as well, there is a reason why newer Volvos have no resale value. The last T6 from Volvo was notoriously unreliable and not that fast for the amount of HP that it had. All recent Volvos are incredibly unreliable, nothing like the Volvos from 20 years ago.

I don't know about prices in the US, but I understand that the Rabbit is supposed to be quite good, depends how old/new you can go! Reason I'm saying this is because I've got a Golf MkV and they're really good to drive.

Go Rabbit! :D

A nice pair of walking shoes or a bike should suit you well.

Also, the "and a half" doesn't help your case for getting a nicer car. Juuuust letting you know.

But yeah, this post is relatively old—I wonder if the OP already splurged on a car or took the sound advice and either got an inexpensive one or decided to save the money?

Seriously....the OP hasnt come back, this thread is months old...

no one is actually taking any suggestions.

Good point, I am amazed this thread is still on topic!

I just wonna make my suggestion: DeLoreans are amazing!

One more thing, how come I cant get a car when I am 16, I have to wait until 18!!!
