Looking for some suggestions here. I bought a cheap case from Amazon for protection, but I'm not happy with it since it's so hard to remove for cleaning.

You mention a very important detail: Debris will manage to get between the case and the watch and will leave scratches immediately - 100% guaranteed. So: use a case, but do not remove it, unless you want to discover the damage it causes.

Alternative: do not use a case and have less or no damage.

When I went to Africa to do a pedestrian bridge build, I wore the Spigen Rugged Armor Pro and a glass screen protector. It's the only time I've ever used a case/screen protector on an apple watch, but half-way across the world, it seemed like a good idea.

Agree 100% with @axantas though; dirt worked its way into the case and left marks on the titanium frame down near the watch band connector points. I'm certain that if I hadn't worn the case, those marks wouldn't be there. They don't bug me too much, as you can tell ;-)
