I purchased my macbook pro in July 2009, and it came installed with Leopard. I received an upgrade disk to snow leopard from Apple from the upgrade program. Since Steve said the best way to do a clean install of Lion is to do a clean install of Snow Leopard... would the best way to do this be to do a clean install of Leopard, then upgrade to Snow Leopard, then download Lion? If so, how do I go about doing this?

No need to reinstall 10.5 Leopard in order to install 10.6 Snow Leopard. You can even do a clean install from the Lion installer, but you may need to burn the downloaded DMG to a DVD or clone it to an external HDD (using GUID as partition map scheme and HFS+/Mac OS Extended as format).
