You just need a phillips for the bottom plate. To get the HDD out you need a Torx but not for the RAM.

I just ordered the G. SKILL RAM from Newegg, hopefully I get it by Friday!

I have many small philips head screwdrivers - for that, i'm fine.

is a torx a special kind of screwdriver? do i absolutely need it and for what exactly? will sears (or a store of the like) have it?

(sorry for such detailed/annoying questions - but my drive and ram will be at my house by 10:30 am tmrw morning and would like to get it in ASAP! thanks!)

Well I haven't done it myself, but I just looked it up again on iFixIt, and it appears you will need a T6 Torx to take the hard drive out, but before that you need a tri-wing screwdriver to remove the battery.

I am looking here

Sears may sell those but I would say Home Depot or Lowes would be more likely to have them.

Any UK/european decent deals? Failing that, I don't have a newegg account, what are the shipping rates generally?
Pick one or get G.Skill Apple Series (£148 plus shipping if you click the german flag at the top-right, Avitos i.e. takes PayPal).

If you want to replace the hard drive, yes. But you want to replace the RAM.

Amazon has them

The torx is a special star shaped bit that has been used in the auto industry for years. The T6 is very small. Amazon has them in several kits. Just search torx on their site.

i just picked up a tremendous kit for $10 at microcenter..has flat, philips, torx and hexagonal (don't know what those are called) heads..not bad.

Oh my god people, stop talking about Torx screwdrivers on this thread. YOU DO NOT NEED A TORX to change the memory.

on the i5 17 mbp you dont need a t6 to remove the hard drive. I did it this morning. still waiting for the ram prices to drop.

So this looks like the best deal... Have any of you bought this? I have the 2.66GHz i7

Mine is up and running right now! The "cheaper" one on NewEgg works fine in my late 09 MBP. Took me 2 tries to get it installed properly, but now its simply great!

This is the one I got

Got a twin pack of some 12V solar battery maintainers too? lol Guess its even better if those actually work!

Very happy with it overall. Can't wait for SSD to go on sale or at least drop in price.

Just got my refund back for my NuRam, gonna give the G.Skill a shot, ran that in my PC for years and haven't ever had a problem with it. Ordered the Non-Mac version since they where out of it. Hopefully I won't have any graphics issues with this set of ram otherwise I'm gonna start to scream!!

I just ordered the 8GB kit from crucial on amazon for $234 with the expedited shipping.

I've seen too many threads about the NURAM giving macbook pros trouble. I only trust either Crucial, Transintl or OWC but I usually go with Crucial.

There are times when my RAM gets to about 56mb of free RAM left and I'd love to up my vmware windows to 1GB from 512mb.

Do you guys notice the system running much more snappy from 4GB to 8GB? I've never had more than 4GB of RAM on a macbook pro but I've had 16GB on my 2008 2.8GHz 8 core Mac Pro that I used to own.

it seems to blow through more intensive tasks way snappier..i also upgraded the stock hdd to a seagate momentus xt, so it might be partly due to that as well..

i mean things like loading long pdf's, copying and moving large files, opening and editing within Lightroom 3, etc..

I'm running an intel x-25m 80GB SSD G2 HDD already so everything is already amazingly fast. Just some of the applications I use (especially safari at times!!) eats up so much of my RAM (VMWARE fusion too).

I'm hoping more RAM will be addressed to some of the applications that hogs them to run faster with less page outs.

theoretically, that's the exact job of RAM and precisely why people upgrade to more RAM..do it!

if you have the SSD, you'd have to hate for your system's speed to be slowed up by a lack of RAM, meanwhile the SSD is ripping and ready to go..you know?

This is my second computer to have G-Skill RAM in it and I am very pleased. (First was a custom built PC)

Has anyone used this Mushkin Enhanced 8GB memory? What's enhanced about it?
