For some reason, I prefer not using the default apps for mail and calendar. Right now I am using Sunrise Calendar and Mailbox (Beta) from Dropbox. I am not that satisfied with the latter.

I know it is just in beta for now but searching and automated signatures do not work as they should.

What are the alternatives? I am using Gmail and iCloud.

What specifically is wrong with OS X's native Mail and Calendar app's?

Not that much to be honest. I ditched the default calendar app because of it's interface. Sunrise Calendar is just so much easier on the eye. The default mail app is fine too but I really love a bounce (and return) function when it comes to e-mails.

I think I tried just about every mail app out there. I settled on Mailplane 3 and I love it!
