best external drive solution

I currently have a USB 2.0 Thermaltake BlacX hooked to my iMac. It is flaky at best.

I was thinking about getting a thunderbolt device. Are there any that people are currently using with their iMac and rMBP they are happy with?

How are you qualifying "best"? All platter-based hard drives are the same in terms of reliability.

Yes thunderbolt will be much faster than Usb 2, but is it worth the extra cost of the adapter?
