Yes and out of my league. I now think maybe the thing to do is TC 500 gb and go ahead and buy a second internal from apple for $250 (500gb) and call it a day!

Noooo...Don't get the second internal from apple. I'm telling you it couldn't be easier to order and install your own hd.
You can get a 750GB Seagate 7200.11 that will be faster than the drive you will get from apple....and it only cost $200 (the stock hd that I just received from apple is a 500gb Seagate 7200.10). In hindsight I would have stayed with the stock 320gb. I would have then ebayed that and replaced it with a third party hard drive. My extra seagates that I installed are working great. www.barefeats.com has speed comparisons.
You can send me the $50 you save to buy me dinner when you see that it takes 5 minutes to install and that a child could do it. Discharge your static is the only thing you need to know.
Trust me...you can do a search if you want...you can get a bigger, faster, cheaper, hard drive through a third party. See below.

I have to agree with everyone. Installing an additional HD is a piece of cake. All you have to do is discharge static electricity, flip the latch on the back, pull the side case off, then pull out an HD tray, slap the new HD on, screw on the 4 screws, slid it back in, close the case, turn the MP back on and format the HD. Those steps take maybe 2-3 min at max.

Install the HD yourself. Not only is it cheaper for bigger, but you also get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, using your power, ingenuity, and tools. You will feel like you got more accomplished in the day. You will be able to sit at your computer months from now, look at the 750gb drive with 600gb of data on it, and say, "And to think, I almost got one that was 250gb smaller. Glad I didn't do that."

hi cyd,

JT has some great info in this posts, but his point about the internal HDs is so true....I honestly believe, I could almost put an internal in with my eyes closed. i can't think of how any manufacturer can make it any easier. Apple really hit the ball park with that idea. Now, i don't know if their extra internal sata cables changed position on the logic board in the new mac pros from last year's model, but that's just me whining for nothing to concern you :)

buy an internal and giddy up. buy the external for video and/or backup. buy the tc and you're good to go.
cheers,
keebler
PS. it might stretch your budget a wee bit, but it will be worth it.

I guess I've settled on the TC with TM for the daily backups for all of the computers in the house AND an external for video editing and a bootable back up with Super Duper.. TC isn't bootable, correct? It's good if I have to re-install my software, but if I have a HD failure I'll need the external? Is that right? I'm confused..lol
