I'm looking for a 7200RPM Firewire 800 and/or eSATA external drive with a 16MB cache. Does anyone have any strong recommendations, warnings or experiences? The LaCies look nice to me, but I keep hearing about reliability issues with them. I'm probably looking for circa 500GB.

I got me one of these of the 750GB variety:

The quad interface version has all of USB2.0, FW400, FW800, and eSATA. Although I've only had it for a few months, it's served me well so far. Much quieter than the SATA+enclosure drive I have, but that's about a year older.

Also check out G-Tech. They make excellent external drives that use very fast Hitachi Deskstar 16/32 MB hard disks. They cost more than LaCies, but at least you know what drive you're getting under the hood.
