Best firmware for iPhone 2G

Got a feeling I might be a little late to the party here Thing is, I just got an iPhone 2G and its a little laggy (surprise!!). Its on firmware 2.2 with modem firmware 4.05.04. I was wondering which firmware is the best for the 2G in terms of responsiveness, speed and overall performance?

Gotta make the best of what you got, right??!!

The highest you can go on a 2G is 3.1.3 so I'd plug it to itunes and restore/update to that.
