best freeware for recording audio from external source

What is the best to use to record an audio source (such as a tape) on the mac?

Assuming you have the hardware already, here are some options...

If your needs are basic:

- Audacity (free)

- Garageband (not free, but presumably you have it)

If your needs are not basic vis-a-vis mixing and so on...

- Ardour
