What is the best IM app for running in the background using backgrounder. It can be an App for jailbreak or App Store. I would prefer it to be free, but would be willing to pay if it is really worth the money.

Why run it in the background and kill your battery life when BeejiveIM keeps you logged in as long as you like with push email notifications (including quasi text notifications using your phone's text email address) when you get messages outside of the app?

If you don't want to pony up the funds for that then you can use Palringo, which is free and I believe keeps you logged in up to an hour when you close the app, however it doesn't support notifications outside of what is supported with the IM protocols.

Even with just moderate chatting and closing BeejiveIM when I'm not chatting I find it really kills the battery life as does using any other application extensively does so I think Apple has a valid point in preventing apps running in the background, at least until they can reduce the power consumption of the operating system + apps on the iPhone.

I haven't been jailbroken for a long while, but when I was, I used apolloIM which worked perfectly... I don't know if it's still available on though.

BeeJiveIM is really the only option if you want your IM to get to you without having the IM app open all the time. Even with apollo on a jailbroken phone, it kills your battery so fast that it's not worth it. If you use IM a lot, $16 is not that big of a deal. One month of unlimited texting is $20.

I'm waiting for Apple's push service to be made available to IM developers. That's the best solution to the problem. No app in the background sucking battery, yet the app "magically" still gets messages and notifies you.

If you're talking about the best IM application in the App Store, then it's BeeJive (not counting the cost).

If you're talking about the best one to use with backgrounder, I'd still say BeeJive, but Palringo should suffice.

I agree. Beejive is the best IM app in the store. But if you're looking for a free IM app, Palringo's the way to go :)

Best IM App is Mobile Chat BAR NONE.

Ok ok just kidding. MC is not good.

Beejive is the best hands down.
Its worth every one of the 1599 pennies I spent.

I have had palringo running all day in the background and my battery is fine. I was just wondering what other apps people used. I dont have a reason to pay for Beejive because I don't IM a lot anyway. I was just looking for any new apps I hadn't seen. I too am waiting for the push notification service as it will be much better than jailbreaking. Thanks for all the input.
