Good choice, also factor in a decent graphics tablet, something like an A5/A6 Wacom will help you enormously while involved in graphics/imaging; I'm left-handed and use a magic mouse in my right hand and a Wacom A6 tablet and pen in my left. Takes a little while to get used to but once mastered it makes for a very fast workflow.
Yessss, the graphics tablet is nest on the list. As soon as I can afford it, I will be asking for reccomendations. :)

PRP,
Congrats & Thanks for sharing your final configuration.
Your thread and a few others really helped me makes decisions for our order.
Let us know when you get it and how it works our for you.

Based on your workflow description I think (and hope) you'll be very happy with the i5.
I also think you'd be fine with 24GB by adding 16 to what's already in there.
If you decide you want more later, price will inevitably drop.
(paid $115 last year for 16GB kit that's now often $79)

As far as memory goes, I'd advise lots of grains of salt if you try to take in that RAM thread.
My advice after lots of reading: Save grief and just order memory that matches the spec Apple provides.
I'm ordering ram for 4 iMacs from Amazon: Crucial CT2KIT102464BF186D
Right now it's $88 per 16GB. (It's same sped, speed, and class as stock)

In my experience with many dozens of Macs, memory upgrades can be inconsistent.
I've had an MBP balk at RAM that was faster than factory spec,
while an _identical_ MBP ordered/received at the same time took same dimm gladly and still runs grrreat.

Best of Luck

Thank You so much for your comment. I am really glad that this thread helped you out with your own decision process. I consider myself savvier than the average bear when it comes to some of this stuff, but really... there is just so much to take in. I am tremendously grateful for these forums and such a supportive and patient community.

I made it through the RAM thread. & came to that conclusion.... stick to the Apple specs. In fact, I was just about to order these:
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1866 (PC3-14900) 204-Pin SODIMM Memory BLS2K8G3N18AES4 / BLS2C8G3N18AES4

B&H has them quite a bit cheaper, tho back-ordered. I am wondering just how long these back orders typically are. a couple weeks... months? The ones you listed are already up to $95 per 16GB.

UPDATE: I just realized the kit i linked to is not quite apple spec... it's CL10 and 13. Which is one of the big debates of whether it will work or not. I ordered the kit you listed. In the interest of saving time... I am playing it safe. ;)

PunkRawkPurl,

I, too, am a B&H customer. While I can't tell you about your RAM I have ordered items that were back-ordered and I was pleasantly surprised when they came quickly. I think that B&H shows that an item is unavailable rather than available for backorder if they don't know when it will be in stock. It may be worth a telephone call.
