How many 3.5" hard disk drives can this Mac Pro fit? Ideally I would like to have 8 pieces of 3.5" drives and another 6 pieces of 2.5" drives, but I can't see how that would work, so I could settle for just 5 pieces of 3,5" in a RAID 6 configuration. 2.5 INCH drives are so small and light anyways that they don't really need to be screwed in, they can sufficiently be fixed with just tape and string. Not pretty, but the only choice if one wants more internal hard drives in a full machine.

Yeah, I almost bought the transintl one, but just went with sonnet instead. The sonnet is great for what it is...

In my J3i I have:
  1. My Time Machine HDD -- a 4TB Toshiba from like 2014 (solid as a tank)
  2. My Windows SSD -- a Crucial MX500 2TB SSD
  3. My Gaming SSD -- a Crucial MX300 750GB SSD
Time Machine and Windows are both connected via SATA, and the Gaming drive is connected via USB 3.0
Toshiba is the inheritor of IBM's legendary 3.5" hard drives.

But the nMP board only has 2x SATA ports and the single USB 3.0 one, so how would you connect more than 3 drives?

Can you daisychain SATA?

Maybe there is a SATA>PCIe cable? *shrug*
There are PCIe cards with SATA connectors on them, so called expansion cards. That's the whole point of PCIe.
man, that 7,1 is a work of art. Much more than the 6,1 and 5,1 were. So happy the rumours point to the 8,1 being the same case.

Yo, @ZombiePhysicist. Here's a good one and I want to get this in the future as well.

EDIT: Ahh you said for 2.5" drives. This is for M.2 drives but maybe usful if ever want M.2 drives.

Another reason why PCIe slots are important. So much STORAGE :0
Too bad the latest rumour say it might be buried. Lord how Apple is stupid these days. Frankly most things from USA is, sadly.

Instead of ripping off as much money they can from the few that actually needs this machine's unique capabilities, they should sell it at a break even price to entice people to use it and experiment a bit to attract developers. You know, developers developers developers developers developers. That would probably net them more money in the end, by making it a more attractive platform. Most people want small machines anyway.

Happy new year, but I'm bracing myself for things going for the worse.

With TeraTrio Tray in top position with 3 x 3.5" drives and PCI SATA card and another TeraTrio put on top of GPU, you can have 6 x 3.5" drives internally. Or, you can buy Pegasus (very expensive) and get 3 + 4 = 7 drives.

6 hard disks in this configuration. I have two machines with the Pegasus R4i. So I put this one up for sale, in Sweden.

Very nice setup! :) I love how Pegasus R4i looks so sleek and pro. :)
I think so too. And I am always amazed of the feel when I pull one HD module out, and slot it back in. The casing is very good to the touch as well. It was/is expensive, and definitely feels like a premium product in all aspects.

It is out of stock from Promise. But looks like they are still offering parts in the US.

I picked up this a few years ago:

It's a 2.5" SSD mount for $35.

You'll be capped to SATA 6Gb/s, but for general work the fast access times are of course the main benefit.

The link to buy one still seems to work, but I'm not sure if it's still being made.

EDIT: added the link
