iPad resale is typically very low - especially after the new model comes out.

I sold an original mini at the end of 2015 for AUD $150, and I purchased it new after it came out for AUD $300. I was pretty happy. Also sold an iphone 4s at the same time for AUD $150 which I bought in 2012 for $500.
In my experience Apple gear holds up on resale.

I picked up an iPad Air two a week and a half ago or so, and I absolutely love it. I plan on using it for college once the semester starts again. Reading on this is glorious, as is annotating PDFs. I wouldn't wait for the 3, unless there's a feature that you're really waiting for. iPad Air 2 is gonna be around for a long time.

even when the 3 comes out? I probably will :/

You know what? You are right, but why stop there? What I really recommend, is to wait until the 5, so that way you won't regret having the latest and the fastest for a long (although finite) time and in the end you will show all those suckers who got iPad 3s and iPad 4s how lame they are for not waiting and pretending to enjoy and benefit from what at the time were the best. You'll show them then!!

For me, the reason not to bring my laptop is because of the weight.

For that, i prefer the mini. At times, i only want my bag to be as light as possible, especially when i'm heading out after school.
