What iPhones were the best buy in terms of overall experience at the time of their release

The current one, what's with all the nostalgia trips lately?

This isn't even a good poll, the significant models like the original iPhone, iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 are just lumped into "models before 5S".

Strange list. The absolute best iPhone is missing: the original SE.

The 12 mini is tossed in the same response as the 12. The 12 mini is a good replacement for the SE. Not nearly as comfortable to use, but still the best we have seen in years. The larger 12 has nothing going for it.

The 12 line is the best in terms of overall experience - that's why it's the latest and greatest
Until the next model is released. Repeat until Apple retires the iPhone and comes up with something else.

Without a doubt, my best experience was when I purchased a white iPhone 4S. Man, I loved that phone. So simple in its execution and so much better than the 4 was. iOS6 was buttery smooth and a joy to use. Yes, other models following the 4S have vastly improved; I get that. Yet, no way will the experience of opening that 4S box and setting up that iPhone ever be replicated.

I currently use a 12 Pro Max. It is an excellent iPhone. However iPhone X brought FaceID. Like FaceID so much

At the time of release...

It's hard to pick one, as each iteration had something I thought was great about it at the time.

4S got Siri
5S got TouchID
6+ got the big screen
X got wireless charging, OLED and FaceID, but lost TouchID and the headphone jack
XS Max got the bigger screen
11 Pro got the extra camera but lost 3D touch

I think I'll go with the X as the overall best new experience. Despite losing a couple features, it had the most new tech to get excited about.

The iPhone 11 was the best in my opinion. It had night mode cameras and so much more! That was also my first time using Face ID, too! I feel like the iPhone 12 is a 5G iPhone 11 with MagSafe.

Overall experience is a good choice of words. The XS was my first iPhone and I often take it out and seriously think of going back to it. It has the right screen size for me, the right weight for me, the right styling for me, more than enough processor power for me - in fact the overall experience was and is right for me. Now I have a slab-sided brick that struggles to fit in a pocket and I wonder what on earth possessed me to buy it!

I be honest Iphone X is my favorite, I never really use the camera since I love my sony cameras and its still working well. plus the camera bump isn't really annoying when going naked

I haven't used many (i)phones and I don't think I've even seen an iPhone later than the iPhone 8 in person, so I'm missing two redesigns. That said, the best looking iPhone for its time was certainly the iPhone 4s to me. I had a Galaxy S+ and was always a little envious of my friend who had the 4s. But since I was living on 80 bucks a month after rent, that wasn't really a feasible purchase.

3GS - introducing 3G was ground breaking at the time
5 - bigger screen finally and classic squared off design
6 - even bigger screen
X - no home button, OLED for the first time
12 - 5G

in my opinion these are the 5 phones which are leap forwards.....

From the list, I would say the 11 Pro/Max. It enjoys the maturity of the design (Xss if you will), with many design decision benefits like matte glass back and larger battery for user comfort. The battery life improvement itself is a huge boon for iPhone users, especially those liking the smaller form factor 5.8" Pro.

Even though I voted for the 12 mini, I do agree with you. The iPhone X is the most innovative and iconic iPhone ever made, so far, IMO. I also think it's the best looking iPhone ever made, by far (the siler one is my favourite). I still hate the big, ugly 3-camera-bump design - it's simply not aesthetically pleasing to me, at all. It's a big part of the reason I never bothered with the 11-series, and I wouldn't have bothered with the 12-series either if it hadn't been for the Mini. For all those reasons, and more, I'll be keeping my iPhone X as a spare phone/collectors item :) There are a couple of iconic and innovative smartphones I'll never get rid off, and the X is part of that little collection, hehe.

Imo it's probably easier to point out which IPhone that had the worst experience on its release. :D

The worst imo is the 6 Plus. 1GB RAM, weak GPU, it even lagged out of the box.

The rest doesn't seem to have a showstopper issue when launched.

From my history so far I’d have to say the iPhone 4, to me it was like a piece of jewellery, and the 6S which I still have, because it’s still fast enough to run iOS. And it’s nice and slim and compact with the best finger print biometric scanner on any phone IMO.
