currently I have the below as my laptop pad. I think it's okay but anyone have any suggestions? Are they needed?

Those make little if any difference, basic thermal dynamics - they're cooling the exterior of your computer, when it's generating heat on the interior. It's like putting a fan outside your house expecting the internal temperature to go down... All they really do is keep the outside shell cool, if that's something you desire then go for it.

So no, they are not needed and are kind of a scam. Especially, stay well away from any that plug straight into your laptop, a Logitech should be okay but a lot are cheap nasty electronics that have a capacity to damage the laptop.

I’ve never used one, or recommended them. The fans ramp up in the machine, and it will thermal throttle if things get really hot.

I just find the coolers bulky, noisy and annoying, and don’t bring great benefits, especially with the MacBooks having a completely enclosed bottom case.

Cooling pads are designed more for Windows laptops that have vents on the bottom. Even then you end up counteracting the flow of the fan.

I tested a cheap one that was rated 21db ran at 1000 RPM with a 140mm fan, and it definitely cooled the system down - posted the results video on my channel, but the main problem was that it was noisy.

I've got a more expensive one on order which has a 200mm fan and runs at 600 RPM, if that one's quiet I'll let you know.

Thanks guys. Mine is just a pad. Doesn't have fans. I guess it serves no purpose. Except to protext me make on the desk stand for work. Since metal to metal is bad idea.

Occasionally, when I'm really pounding on my 2017 12" MacBook, I'll pull a Pelican 5lb freezer cooler pack out, throw a towel on top (so no moisture), and sit the MacBook on it for a while. Does a good job of cooling the aluminum, and getting CPU temps down low.
