Silent updates, such as an upgrade to the eMac specs, or something considered "minor" compared to the rest of the updates? Would it be smart to wait a week before making a decision then? Is a week the standard time frame, or could it be 10 days, 2 weeks... etc.?

I would wait 2 weeks. Apple does this sometimes to keep themselves in the news a bit longer. ;)

I'd look at Dell, LG, or Samsung. Mind you that LG sells their LCD panels to Apple and Dell, so you're buying a good product if you bought any of those 3 monitors. Samsung is also supposed to be decent, but I'm not sure if you'd find what you're looking for with $300 or less. I'd get a CRT or an eMac.

Unless things have changed in the last year or two, I don't think you can get a decent LCD for sub-$300.

Dell has regular specials ($50-$100 off) on their LCDs and as long as you don't buy the absolute cheapest model you get a nice value. I have certainly seen a nice 17" under $300 lately, but you have to get it at the right time.

Watch deal sites like GotApex.com for specials from Dell and CompUSA. If you buy from a store, make sure you get a good brand like NEC, Samsung, Viewsonic (I personally use vp171b's on my G5 and PC, absolutely love them), etc.
