So what hard drives are you synology 411j guys using? I did ask in my thread but figure this ones had far more people in it.

I have always used a WD 2tb green drive and believe they are on the supported list also.

But wonder if theres one that maybe cheaper? as I am going to be needing 3 or 4 of them

Yeah I'm going to be getting a Synology DS211/DS211J soon and wanted to know which HDs to get.

I would guess it is recommended to get a 7200RPM rather than 5400RPM to maximise read/write speeds?

I was looking at 2x WD Black Caviar 2TB 7200RPM Sata 6Gb/s drives.

Which drives have you guys been using with success?

Ive got a ReadyNAS NV+ with 4x2TB (WD EARS) in RAID5 config which works fine with my Mac Mini, 2 MBAs and Sumvision Media Centre all connecting through a Airport Extreme and Airport Express.

Hi guys. Im new here. In a few days Im gonna be making the switch (not the one in Seinfeld) from pc to mac. Now I have a western digital mybook studio edition 2 tb connected to my wag320n router via usb port. I can access my files via network and from my iphone/ipad via 3g on the go with this software called Air Video.

Now when I get my hands on my new macbook pro I want to do these with a 2 bay nas:

1- Not have my macbook pro running all day like I did to my ****** pcs

2- Be able read write my video/audio/image/iso files with my mbp while it is in the same network or not (for instance when Im at work or on the road with 3g conection)

3- Be able to view/run my video/audio/image files with my idevices while they are in the same network or not. (streaming the "converted" files, becuse most of my videos are not idevice friendly)

4- Use it as time machine backup drive (or a partition of it)

5- Be able to read/write with a bootcamped windows on my mac

5- Be able to read with a normal pc laptop thats on my lan (sisters:)

6- Be able to restrict some folders to some accounts

7- Donot want to have problems with files larger than 5 gb

8- And finally be able to have it check some rss feeds and download some of my favourite tv shows via torrent

I know thats a lot ;) But there must be some device that can do these. I can afford a thecus. Here where I live synology is 700 something bucks almost twice the price compared to Thecus and netgear readynas is 525 bucks while thecus is only 400 something.

So mainly Im leaning towards the Thecus. You can see its specs here

I know site is in turkish but you can view the spec that are in english.

I will be adding 2 x 2 tb wd caviar greens to the bay which will cost another 320 bucks, god! ;)

What do you thing about my plan? Is there anything Im missing tech-wise?

Edited: I just got my hands on my macbook pro. :)

Nv+

I Bought a NV+ last month with 4x2tb Seagate eco friendly drives. Had major issues getting time machine to work on my mac... but then it actually turned out I had bought at a bit of an inconvenient time when Lion came out and the NV+ firmware wasn't compatible with the NV+. But a week or so later Netgear released a beta version of the firmware compatible with Lion, so that was that issue sorted...

I can definitely recommend the NV+, a little slow on the transferring via wireless, but sweet as transferring via Ethernet. And streaming movies wirelessly to my Mac is smooth with no hickups, my PS3 hickups from time to time if I'm trying to stream wirelessly... (probably because my mac is usually hogging the network)...

Now my issue is that my PS3 won't play mkv files, so am looking at other media player alternatives, like ATV2 running XBMC. I've heard this can stream mkvs from my NV+... but I've not tested it as I don't have an ATV2 to JB and install XBMC. I know there are things like Plex, or PS3MS but what i want to be able to do is play allllll my movies via either my PS3 or ATV2 with XBMC from my NV+ and it won't matter if my Mac is turned on or not.

Any one done this?

I've tried just about everything and I finally settled on a Mac Mini running Plex. Expensive yes, but it really cut out just about every headache. For a media front end I don't think Plex can be beat. I considered the ATV2 route but it just doesn't have enough muscle. It's too bad the PS3 can't play MKV because that would be a great solution although the Plex UI crushes it. And PS3 Media Streamer is SUPER buggy for Macs. I tried for months to get MKV Bluray rips to play via ethernet (forget wireless). Some would and some wouldn't. I finally said screw it and bought the Mini. The only other alternative I would consider is a Boxee Box but even that has it's own issues. I've had the Mini for over a year now and besides an occasional reset it works great.
