We have a "What movie are you watching?" thread, but this is the "Best of the Year thread".

General Rules:
  • Movie was Released in 2017
  • There are no other rules
Mine:

  1. Blade Runner 2049 - Probably the best sequel I have seen in years. Dark, stark, and in the spirit of the original, all while still going in an entire different direction
  2. The Shape of Water - A truly groundbreaking and controversial monster movie
  3. The Big Sick - a sensitive comedy charmingly written and acted
  4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Despite some obvious flaws, TLJ is a fitting and fun movie in the Star Wars canon
  5. Wonder Woman - The only super hero film that truly resonated this year. Despite a video game ending this was the best of the bunch from DCEU by a long shot
Honorable Mention: Thor Ragnarok (funny and a nice break for an otherwise serious character), Spider-man Homecoming (another reinvention in the MCU which probably works best since Spider-man 2)

I don’t have a favorite. :( Flaws, serious flaws seem to be common with big franchises trying to perpetuate themselves. The best I've seen, and what I’ve seen is limited, maybe Bladerunner 2049 despite it’s flaws. I need to stream it again before I decide to purchase.

I just watched a trailer for The Shape of Water and put it on my to watch list. :)

Comment about trailers, (viewed the new Jurassic Park movie 2018 trailer) they are showing way too much in previews these days. Usually when I see that, it makes me suspicious of the movie especially when they include significant plot reveals.

I don't really have a favorite because none of the ones I watched lived to my expectations, but I agree that Thor was a nice surprise as I felt like it was quite different from the previous ones in the sense that it felt light-hearted, hilarious, and a lot of fun.

Justice League wasn't as awful as Batman vs. Superman but it wasn't that good, either; I feel like I should have waited for it to come out on DVD instead of shedding good money for its premiere showing.

Bladerunner was quite good but I didn't really watch the old one so I don't have a basis for comparison, however it was a 8/10 overall for me as I am a huge fan of Ryan Gosling and felt like he was excellent in the movie, and of course it was a delight seeing Harrison Ford on the big screen again.

One movie that caught me by surprise and that I absolutely enjoyed was Baby Driver. Although there wasn't much to the plot and story-line, I loved how fast-paced and action-filled it was, especially watching it after smoking a couple of joints. The soundtracks in the movie were also stellar and I feel like they really added to the whole ambiance of the movie.

I don't really have much to say about Spider-Man: Homecoming as I found it absolutely terrible and was so disappointed because I am a huge fan of the Spider-Man franchise.

Overall it was a decent year in movies but I'm hoping for a better one in 2018!

There were some pretty outstanding original films released this past year - it's not unlike popular music, you have to dig a little past the high profile material - still, there were some equally fantastic, big studio movies (some sequels).

Get Out!
Blade Runner 2049
Coco
The Big Sick
Dunkirk
Logan Lucky
Lucky (not a mistake, different movie!)
The Lost City of Z
Logan
The Last Jedi

Some smaller, outstanding horror releases:

A Dark Song
The Devil's Candy
Raw
Creep 2 (watch as a double with the original Creep, super fun)

Lots of terrific movies, varied genre, something for everyone :D If I was going to pick my favorite it would be a three way tie with Get Out! (for originality, turning horror tropes on their head, clever, dark comedy), BR 2049 (for somehow doing what I thought impossible, and making a worthy sequel), and Logan (an incredible mix of a "real world" take on Wolverine combined with beautiful character moments, and a perfect ending)

This is sad, really... I legitimately cannot recall one recently released movie that left me as fulfilled as some from years passed...

Commentary on the crap that Hollywood is producing, I guess (respectfully, JMO)
Movies from years passed like?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was probably the one I most enjoyed. It's not usually my genre but I liked how it was done.

For a razzie?
In comparison to the typical superhero films, I guess it was a bit too hard to follow. I notched it for mixing new and old music. They should have stuck with the time period. They used the wrong version of Schiller's song, and they could have easily used some Falco hits in the movie, and remained true to the era and the impending end to the GDR, even if it was by an Austrian singer. Coincidentally, they used an English version of Der Kommissar, which was and still is terrible today, even decades later. Then again, the movie felt a bit ruined because they used that Schiller song. Which I haven't liked since the first time I heard it on radio. The use of remakes destroyed the mood the film set for the viewer, or at least me. Their version of Blue Monday is a total hack compared to the original song, which would have set the sultry mood of that particular scene fairly well.

Car choices were a bit strange, too. If you're a dirty intelligence agent, you're not going to be driving a regular old 190E. You'd be driving something more interesting for the time and expensive, like a 560SEC. Compare the measly 190E to the dirty British agent with the 964 whale tail. And unless I'm mistaken, both the MBZ and the Porsche were non-Euro spec.

This is getting off topic, but if you haven’t seen Arrival, Her, Looper, , Ex Machina, Ingrid Goes West, you are missing out. Might change your mind

Some of us don't really like science fiction or fantasy. I think a movie like Flypaper is better than most of the comedy movies Hollywood puts out.

Dunkirk (its been a really slim year for me, movie wise)

Correction: my favorite movie of 2017 is "A Ghost Story", Dunkirk comes in second.

I'll have to check those out ^^^

I have very odd taste in movies--admittedly.
Some of the crap the I like, is most definitely not the stuff other people like...

Some of my faves from past years were (and don't laugh, bc I'm no film critic, and also... some of these are maybe "out there" to some, and def not from 2017):

St. Vincent (if you're unaware.... Bill Effing Murray),
The Fundamentals of Caring,
Enough Said,
I am Sam,
Night Will Fall,
Devil's Rejects (Rob Zombie is doing some great stuff),
Dances with Wolves,
The Road (book was better, Yes... I'm totally that person),
A time to kill (in spite of Matthew McCaunehey<---whatever),
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas,
The Hateful Eight,
(and Django Unchained, along those same lines with Tarantino),
Gangs of New York.

I dunno... I'm tough to please in the movie department.
I'll watch whatever, but I'm weird about it.

Also... I'll watch every horror movie out there, I'm constantly on the quest to feel as freaked out as I did as a kid watching "Scary movies", lol

American Made - I enjoyed this flick.

I can never get enough of the Naked Gun and Airplane Series.

Then there’s the seasonal movies
Christmas Story
Christmas vacation
Elf

The Notebook ( yeah my sappy romance movie )

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was probably the one I most enjoyed. It's not usually my genre but I liked how it was done.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was the only movie I saw in the theaters this year. It was one of the few movie sequels that I thought was as good as the first one.

Ex Machina, although not 2017 is one of the best movies, if not the best movies I’ve seen in the last couple of years. It’s brilliant (qualifier) if you like A.I. stories that examine the pitfalls of emulating the human brain.
