considering a new laptop (either air or pro), and, esp. with the air, considering how to deal with lack of built in connectivity, compared to my 2011 Pro. needing a hub adds expense and need to carry it. not up on hubs for the most recent generation of laptops. any great suggestions?

superdrive, sd card, monitor/tv cable, HDMI, external hard drive, thunderbolt, usb-c, all that stuff is possible.the air only has two connections. pro is better, but more $$.

Because one of your criteria is Thunderbolt, you’ll need a Thunderbolt 3/4 hub. Not cheap but should have the bandwidth to service all those different peripherals. Note the CalDigit TB hubs support the Apple SuperDrive, which typically only works when attached directly to Macs.

if a hub were $300+, i would then consider the Pro over the Air, with any necessary adapters. M1/M2 Pro maybe? i think the M4 is coming out in October.

Don't get "the air".
Get the MacBook Pro, and AFTER you have it, re-assess your "port needs" ...
