Mine updates regularly, without opening it.

Third party complications are limited by Apple in how often they can automatically update. I can’t remember the exact time but I think it’s every 10 minutes (probably wrong with that figure).

Every 30 mins I thought.... unless you keep the app running in the dock, it’ll refresh everytime your watch screen turns on

Were you only able to do this customization once you bought the pro version of the app? I just got my apple watch today and this is the one thing that i want to have on my home screen, the steps inside the round complication. But I cant seem to figure it out. Im also new to the world of apple so im still learning.

You could try this one. Pretty basic but does what it says on the tin, and exactly what you want.
