I'm getting thoroughly disgusted with Apple lately, so I'm beginning to explore what options I have in replacing as much of the Apple ecosystem as possible.

In my case I've become heavily reliant on my apple watch due to working remotely and being able to get instantly notified of emails, calls, texts, etc without having to check my phone (as well as checking weather updates.) In addition, I also tend to use my watch a lot by adding reminders to my grocery list, or other general reminders (via Siri). I'm wondering if Android has an equal to this, and if there's a particular phone brand it should be best paired with? The only one I'm aware of so far is the Gen 3 smart watches from Fossil as far as I know.

Look into the Galaxy line paired with the gear S3. Best combo outside of apple IMO.

I second this recommendation, based purely on my experience with Android Wear and the available hardware. I’ve never used the Gear Watches but they can’t be worse than Android Wear which is a far inferior user experience vs. WatchOS, IMO. The Gear hardware is nicer than any Android Wear hardware I’ve personally owned (LG Watch Urbane and Huawei Watch) or used and the current crop of Android Wear hardware is just awful.

I moved from an iPhone 6s+ and Apple Watch Gen 0 to a Note 8 and Gear S3 Frontier. I love this combo. The Gear S3 is so much more intuitive than AW, and the rotating dial is a better interface, especially in the gym. I also like that it looks like a normal watch.

I appreciate that Samsung makes a good smartwatch but what other non Apple alternatives are any good at all?

None that I can think of outside the specialised Garmin Fenix range for those who take their activity seriously.

Personally, as I use an Iphone 8 I'll never pair it with anything but an Apple Watch.

I'll let you know how the Garmin Vivoactive3 works when it actually releases in Canada. Only one thing I would have liked on it was music storage. But I did buy it to give me a kick in the ass for fitness and part of that is swimming.
