know New Jersey gets poked fun of a lot, but this is where I grew up, my family is still here, and I would miss it to death if I left.
Indeed, njmac. It will take a lot (like the Atlantic rising over and engulfing our state) for me to leave NJ. It's my ideal place to live too.

Portola Valley or Los Altos Hills, CA -- hands down. Those are the hills west of Palo Alto, just south of San Francisco, and they're basically perfect: 10 min drive to Stanford University and Silicon Valley high tech, 25-30 min drive to San Francisco. Perfect weather -- warm, mild, sunny -- NOT foggy and cold like San Francisco. 20 minute drive to the ocean (scenic highway 1!).

Small-town atmosphere, lots of nature, sense of community, safe, airy and light. Excellent schools, beautiful homes, sunny rolling hills, yet literally a 7 minute drive from Silicon Valley hustle & bustle.

Only downside is the price of homes, but sometimes you can rent someone's guest house (like I do) if you're lucky.

haha... well, you're living the dream  How do you like living in London?

It's different and it has its ups and downs but generally speaking I'm really quite happy here. :) It's a very cool area and I find that I miss L.A. a lot less now that I'm living in a place that I actually like. (much of which is due to being in good company ;-) )

It was strange to see this thread bumped and find my post. I found the edit most satisfying.

(I hate answering in just smilies, but really: :) )

For me it would have to be close to the Mediterranean from Catalunya round through the Languedoc-Roussillon and Italian Riviera down as far as Napoli. Wouldn't have to be on the coast though. The country on both sides of the Eastern Pyrenees is beautiful a long way inland.

I have three places I would love to live. One being NYC. Something about it just makes me love that place. The fact that they have everything and more. The night life is great. Most people outside of NYC hate it but I have loved it since I was 5.

I grew up in the SF bay area, and was always fantasizing about moving to NYC.

I did it ten years ago and am absolutely love it. I'm in Brooklyn. 10 mins to Manhattan, beach in the summer, snow in the winter.

I never want to leave!!!

Estes park, CO

I love that place.

the Island of Iona, off the coast of Mull, off the coast of Scotland

Beautiful. I've only seen it from Mull, though we did go to the oh-so mini dock for Iona and local fishermen.

I just love islands. Sorta realised recently that England is an island (I know, dur!) and I smiled a little bit. I just love the feeling of them, being surrounded by water, in a tight knit community. Iona gets a lot of sun too though I don't care much for raging heat places, find it saps my energy! Meh. Nobody is going to know where the hell I'm on about. It's like so insignificant.

You bring up a really great point. Home most certainly can be the best place on earth, even if it isn't perfect!

I went to Jersey for a wedding last year, it is a beautiful place just thirty minutes out of NYC! I was astounded at the scenery and natural beauty, after hearing it's reputation and previously only seeing it from I-95. Even has killer waves, but cold sometimes.:p
I already live in paradise, problem is that everybody else wants to live here too and it's getting crowded. Need.............. more ..................... hurricanes.

Hunterdon, on the border of Somerset, though I hail from Essex.

Nice avatar, btw. We're big fans of Ming-Ming at my house too.

I love Hunterdon County but unfortunately it was too pricey for us when we were first buying our house so we settled in beautiful Sussex county. I grew up in Bergen County.
My kids love the wonder pet. Everytime they catch me surfing macrumors and see my avatar they get excited and say Ming Ming on your 'puter! :)

That's what I try to tell people: NEW JERSEY is NOT I95!

Speaking of the Jersey Shore... If I were to move within NJ now, I would move to Sea Girt. A small ocean community of about 2,00 people located 1/2 hour from NYC.
