I am about to arrive to LA in a couple of hours and need to get a US number and a LTE service. Is it possible to get the AT&T prepaid sim card? Is there any other one better/ cheaper?

Cricket wireless is $10 sim, plus plans start around $40 and uses ATTs strong network. It limits speeds to 8Mbps though.

T-Mobile pre paid is good if you can find a sim especially if you will be in the large metro areas. Metro PCS uses T-Mobile network so it's also good but it will deprioritize data to T-Mobile just like cricket does with att though not to that extreme.

Honestly if you're going to be here a short time, all of these have similar pricing and performance in the cities. I wonder how easy to sign up for plan like do they take foreign cards? Some of the carriers also sell a pre paid card that you can use to start your plan. Good luck and let us know how the network you chose worked out!

I had AT&T Prepaid goPhone in the past and since I am going to Maui where the only one that works in between the mountains is AT&T, I was trying to get the service from AT&T directly. Is that still possible?

AT&T GoPhone is still available, and would be my first choice for a traveler. You can find AT&T GoPhone SIM cards for $10 at a number of locations, including AT&T corporate locations, most AT&T third party sellers, WalMart, large drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens, etc. The plan prices for GoPhone, while not the cheapest, are in-line with other options, and should there be an issue, you can get help from AT&T directly.

Current GoPhone monthly plans are $45/$60 for 2 GB/5 GB LTE data. Both plans have unlimited talk and text, and the latter plan also has unlimited talk and text to Canada and Mexico, should that be useful. After you use your LTE data allowance, your data speed will be throttled to 128 Kbps.
