Hello there,
I'm still using an old iPad 3 from 2012 and it's getting annoying that many apps won't work / cant be updated anymore, e.g. Barron's, Tradingview, Office etc.

MR is "cautious" about the current iPad and iPad Air.

I don't want to spend a lot and a refurbished or older model would be fine. I thought the iPad 10.2 would be a good choice for reading / charts, because it has a slightly larger screen. Has this been around only for the current generation?

At the refurbished store, there's currently an 6th gen iPad (32GB) on sale for 299,--€ but I'm not sure if that's a good deal.
At another store, a 2018 iPad 128GB WiFi Cellular could be had for around 400,--€ or 32GB Wifi+Cellular for 350,--€

Which iPad / generation would you recommend for best price/value atm?

Thanks!

Considering you will be upgrading from iPad 3, both iPad (7th generation) and iPad Air 3 should be fine. You just need to consider that an iPad 10.2” uses an A10 chip and Air 3 - an A12. Not an issue, but if you want to get another 5+ years of your iPad, this might count.

However, with iPad Air 3 there are some people complaining about a white spot issue on its screen, that can be there from a start or appear later on, probably because of the pressure applied to it, as it mostly affects the screen area close to the home button.

Get the iPad Air 3 for future proofing reasons.

Both the entry level iPad as well as the Air 3 would be good purchases for basic iPad use or more. Occasionally you can find these either refurbished or at a discount.

Agree with all of the above recommendations. Considering you're coming from an iPad 3 up until now, the 7th generation would be a great replacement and likely satisfy all your needs quite well.
