I use splashtop when I am on the local network, and logmein when I am connecting remotely. Logmein is much snappier off network, but splashtop is much quicker locally.

So many of these apps require you to install some sort of app on your computer (Splashtop). Do any good ones use the RDP or VNC solutions that come with Windows and OS X? It seems Jump and Screens do.

SPLASHTOP!

I haven't tried any others since May of last year, but when I did nothing came close to the speed offered by Splashtop. The others were all choppy, and most didn't automatically route sound to your iPad.

SPLASHTOP!!! ;)

WAY cheaper then LogMeIn or any others and Works just as good if not better and for $3 bucks (sometimes a buck if you catch it when on sale)

The latest updates gives SO many new navigating options.

LogMeIn now has a free app

I use Splashtop only because I use it to play this Windows game called Synthesia. It's true. I use VNC before and it is not possible to watch videos or play games running on your computer to another computer. With Splashtop, it is all possible. I am really amazed.

Desktop connect, cheap and works great

+1. As another poster mentioned regarding Splashtop, I connect via their desktop server app (Easy Connect) with a Google account so no need to manually configure ports on my router to connect. Had my mom install the server app on her iMac as well--piece of cake now connecting to help her out.

I use Jump for RDP. It actually has a little bit of gesture support as well. You can use two fingers to scroll, which comes in handy quick.

Just used the Free LogMeIn ..... When you sing up for the first time it gives you a 2 week trial of the $40 LogMeIn Pro.

Great looking quality in HD I have to admit but when playing a video ... pure choppyness. Played with a .MKV tv show with VLC player and it looked horrible.

I do like the look but the controls are a bit blah ... I love Splashtop WAY better then this LogMeIn just for remote desktop use (minus the fact splashtop doesn't have the beautiful HD look though).

For videos it really looks like the only route is a app like AirVideo, VLCStreamer, Plex, Etc. to get great quality video playback .... I hate the fact it has to convert and slaughter the PC's resources but it still gives killer quality video playback.

Still testing some stuff out but I think the best route and the cheapest at that is Splashtop for remote desktop use and AirVideo for remote video viewing.

Logmein.com FTW.

Not really FTW if you care about security and are remoting into a Mac.

Logmein does not blank the screen or lock the keyboard on a Mac. It's a problem the company has known about since 2009 and apparently have no intention of ever fixing. Worse still it leaves the user account logged in when you disconnect.

I have no need to ever blank a screen. And you can log yourself out manually before you disconnect. I don't see a problem. FWIW, it there are these options on windows machines.

Just throwing in my two cents - Logmein has my vote. I've got nothing bad to say about Splashtop, I just prefer Logmein. This is a great thread, btw. I've been looking into different solutions, but it seems to me that it's a matter of personal preference.

I would have to second Splashtop for local access and LogmeIn for remote access. When on your local wifi Splashtop is much faster and very reliable compared to the others I've tested but, it is not very good over 3G or remote wifi networks unfortunately. LogmeIn is still much better than the others I've used when connecting remotely; it's great for running a desktop application but in No way practical to watch an HD movie or stream a game.

I use Splashtop on my iPad exclusively. It works great whether i'm on Wifi or tethered via my iPhone on 3G. It is the only program I've used that draws the screen at a good speed - enough to use Photoshop on 3G especially compared to RDP. I use GoToManage to manage my clients machines for remote support but it's not fast enough to use for my own machine.

I've been using Logmein but it tends to have hiccups when streaming and gaming from my pc... Is splashtop smoother with less delay? Or I should say... Which has the least delay for streaming video and games from pc?

I'm disabled and a freelance graphic designer. I've been unable to sit at my computer much for the last couple of weeks due to back and hip issues. I've been operating my pc from my bed using Splashtop, running Photoshop, MS Word, Firefox, and have even downloaded and installed files. The program has served me beautifully. A bit kludgy operating Windows with a touch screen interface, but Splashtop itself is top notch.
