Is it the same Meraki that is present in many coffee shops? Because it has been consistently unreliable, dropping connections randomly, warm-dropping (no data flow but still connected), or outright denying connections to non-Windows machines, and never redirecting to intended page after login. At the very least I'd be wary about getting anything Meraki-branded.

I can't answer that as I don't drink coffee so I don't go to coffee shops. Cisco bought Meraki about a year ago, give or take, and my Meraki equipment at home is all after they where acquired by Cisco. It is very likely that it could be the installation or configuration of the hardware that is causing the issues, the network link connected to the hardware could be very poor.

My home Cisco Meraki equipment consists of:
1 x Meraki MX60 Security Appliance
1 x MR12 802.11n Wireless Access Point
1 x Meraki Z1 Teleworker Gateway (mostly for testing and playing around with)

Additionally I also manage Cisco Meraki equipment at work which includes:
2 x Meraki MX400 Security Appliances
17 x Meraki MS220-48LP Switches
6 x Meraki Z1 Teleworker Gateway (will probably add another 50 or so)

Sure I don't know how recent (or old) the commercial Meraki systems installed in coffee shops are. Configuration is surely one interesting path to follow, and their captive portals always redirecting to Google's search engine instead of the page we came from surely brings them money. From what I could understand (i.e. not that much), they seem to use a Windows-based captive portal, that historically has been non-compliant with non-Windows machines.

Since I experienced these malfunctions in different coffee shops, I assume the network link probably isn't to blame.
