Hello, I have Windows XP installed via Bootcamp. I know that some commercial backup softwares backup also other partitions on the hard drive. As there is a Mac OS partition, the situation may become more complicated due to possible compatibility problems. Could anybody please make the recommendation? Anybody tried the latest version of Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image on a Leopard-WindowsXP (bootcamp) hybrid system?

As far as I understand, Winclone is a Mac application which backups the boot camp windows partition. Will I mess things up if I use the same drive to backup both the Windows (Winclone) and Leopard (Time Machine) systems? I guess Superduper is out of the question as it uses the entire drive to backup the Mac system.

I use superduper for the mac partition and win clone for the bootcamp side. With superduper I back up to a disk image.I have a external drive which I back up my mac. mac book and 2 bootcamp drives. All are separate files.

I used the same drive to save both my windows partition (via winclone) and OS X partition (via Carbon Copy Cloner), but kept them on separate partitions. Might make it a bit easier to boot from, but YMMV.

    Backup and Restore

This subject is near and dear. I found that the two versions of Acronis that I own will not boot correctly on my MBP so Acronis is not a resotore option. Acornis images are mountable so are still valid for some things.

Anyway, using WinClone to copy an image of the BootCamp partition to the OSX partition and then using SuperDuper to make an image to an external drive is one solution. The SuperDuper image can be booted (OSX) and you can copy the image back to an internal drive. Then you can use BootCamp Assistant to establish a BootCamp partition and WinClone to restore Windows.

This process provides assurance that you can recover from a hard disk failure as more of a inconvenience then a disaster. However regular backups of your data files by one means or another is still a very good idea.

Maybe using Time Machine solves these possible problems for some. For my work style I am happy with WinClone and SuperDuper and external drives.

    Neil
