If the controller fails to recognise the SSD, upgrading the OS (probably) won’t do anything.
Ok, I wondered if some support was added for something along the way. But, ok.
Just checked my warranty papers and I do infact have a 850 Evo 250GB somewhere. Hmmm.. wonder which computer its installed in? Need to look for it.
The first suspect, a MBP '11 didn't have the EVO but an Intel 320 160GB drive in it. I have a vague memory that that one could possibly be ok with a G5? Lets try...no nothing.
Lets try something else, I want to see something work in the bottom slot: next I tried couple of 2.5" spinners, nothing. Then a 3.5" spinner, again nothing??! That's weird. WTF? A cable problem? Swap the bottom drive data cable to top boot drive - nothing but a question mark! Goddamit, the cable must be bad. Hmmm... it seem awfully loose, peek into the machine. The fffffuuukin cable is not attached to the motherboard! Aaarrghhh!! Hours and hours wasted for this nonsense! It must have sucked at least a couple of cheap drives worth of electricity already! 🤬 😂
Ok, attach cable, start over. Still the Corsair does not appear. Try the Intel 320: success!! 😅 Disk utility sees it!! Ok, that one has my MBP 2011 -system with gpu-fixes etc., so hopefully something else works. Next I'll try the OWC 6G -drive: yes, it works also and mounts directly to my desktop as it has the appropriate file system. 😍
Haven't heard good things about OWC drives but this is non mission critical machine so its perfect for it. Unnecessary big maybe (1TB) but I'll leave the ex Time Capsule drive (also 1TB) in there too for a backup drive.
And now I am SuperDupering the OS from the spinner to the SSD! 👍🏻 And, now its done - tadaa!! The first successful boot from the SSD! 😎
And meanwhile I shall put the MBP back together.
