But I have a feeling that if I go any further on this tangent, that the whole thread will quickly shift into flames over alcohol, narcotics, and the like.

I certainly hope not.

I did my share of imbibing in college, but after two years of saying I'd never do it.

In retrospect, I'm glad I did "crawl into the bottle" a bit, as it taught me discipline and responsibility, and at first the hard way (holding on to a cold porcelain bowl, yelling "I am in HeEeEeEeEeLL!"). But I firmly believe I am a better person as a result, and I have some killer stories to boot. :D

Yes, I went greek too. Like the alcohol, I was GDI at first. Then I figured out all my friends were TKE's. End of story. They are to this day some of the best people I have ever known - and still know, as I converse with many regularly.

(If you'd like to know... it's not much - it's moving servers)

Don't be afraid to try legal things. And don't shy from pushing the envelope a bit.

I agree. Any1 who is not interested in trying those things usually will carry a closed mind into other situations. Its simply being able to relate to more people. I have done A B C D, or I only kbnow A B, and have no idead about the rest.

Get off the high horse, relax a while. Date some girls, and enjoy yourself. When its all over, memories and the time with freinds and family are the only important things in life. When it comes down to it, who cares about the new tech gadets. Give me 1 week of vacation in Ibiza, versus a new cell....

But we are all different so experiencing new things maybe isnt important to you.

I'm not saying go smoke pot laced with coke, I just think there is an important life experiences to be had. Heineken can help.

Maybe I am just too "typical californian"

I think everyone should have a one night stand, learn to surf, work hard, play hard, eat healthy, work out...use macs.

I just think there is more to life than

Childhood, Top College, Job-(work for 40 years) retire, buy a cadillac, die.

If that is all you want from life, then so be it. I would rather make 20-30K less and have fun then stress out in the few years we have on this earth.

My current job is so kick back. I make a hell of a lot of money for what I do. And Here I am at work, on macrumors, making 45 bucks an hour. The best thing about my job is we work 12 hr shifts, so I take 2 days off, and I get 7 straght days off. I travel all the time... its great!

I certainly agree with that. But I don't think that getting drunk is something I want to experience more than once.

Patrick - so what should I major in in college? Comp Sci?

I was thinking of majoring in comp sci and minoring in business. Making me good corperate material.

That's a pretty good idea. Thout I'd say try to even up the Comp Sci with Managment - double major if you could handle it.

But I really think there is something there if you were to double as Comp Sci and structural engineering.

a good college and long term steady job are important, but there are just so many people in the world who have no other focus than that narrow path...and i live in a "retirement" community with a lot of wealthy, formerly successful people and at the age they are at now, half of them don't remember a thing

and while they walk around in their stanford sweatshirts, they sit around the post office and talk about how great their bowel movement was in the morning

at that age, little else matters so don't waste your life doing just the path everybody expects of you lest you end up a 77 year old man at a post office bragging to his cohorts about soft poo vs hard poo after the senior citizen all you can eat buffet:p

The above makes a lot of sense. Being a geek is not cool.... Working hard to have a good life IS cool.

Traveling, enjoying the nicer things in life, being kind to other people, those are important.

Back to the topic, I strongly feel that the pure sciences are the way to go. If you are up to it, Physics, or Electrical Eng, are the best way to prepare for a Engineering Field career. You can do anything a Comp Sci major can with those degrees, and much more.

the pure engineering fields, as outlined by MIT, like electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, etc are also great because they don't quickly get obsolete...my friend, who now teaches software engineering who went to MIT to finish three degrees, says his college will never see his current field as an engineering field

job related "in the moment" psuedo engineering degrees like network engineering degrees centered around CCNA 2/NT/XP or software engineering centered around this week's hot programming language do not have the longevity of the traditional brick and mortar engineering sciences

one reason my friend has kept his job was that because he did get two of his three MIT degrees in the standard engineering fields of electrical and electronic engineering...his two computer science degrees, from MIT and Stanford are long obsolete since they dealt with vacuum tube technologies, machine laguage, assembly language, and card readers

one day, however, the computer science degree will stabilize and concepts and languages taught in school will last a whole career...we are still in the infancy of computers and still in the growth stage...of all people, the woz has predicted a stoppage in processor speed one day and said that even has its limits

I could definitely handle double majoring I think.

I'll talk to my mom about this :).

to round up what others have said before:

"Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life"
(Confucious )

"Follow your bliss"
(Joseph Campbell)

...btw, some people really enjoy making the big bucks. Business/management skills are a must for that.

I am definitely one of those people ;).

I think the people I work with will be more important in determining whether or not I enjoy my job or not (rather than the job itself).

I just got a new job a few months back this summer. My best friend is my boss, I get paid more than I ever have before, I enjoy what I do and I take pride in my workmanship.

Life is good. I am definitely not making the big bucks, but who the hell cares?

It sure beats working!
