Best time to buy 5K iMac?

I'll be buying a new iMac around September/October.

I have been out of the loop of when refresh times have been. Does the iMac get updated every year?

Yes and it will be updated this Fall. For sure we'll see USB-C, probably Thunderbolt 3. Maybe Kaby Lake CPUs and AMD Polaris GPUs, but I am skeptical on both.
