I'm asking this here because a lot of you know about the trends and variations in Apple product pricing over the course of a year.

My friend is looking to buy an iPhone 8 in the next few months. She doesn't need cutting edge tech, so we are not interested in the iPhone x.

When would be the optimal time to buy the iPhone 8 (in the United States) over the next few months ? We would probably not be able to wait more than 6 months, so the time frame is between now and June 2019.

Thanks a lot !

I would think that anytime between now and the next few months will be a good time to buy an iPhone 8. Prices for an iPhone 8 are not going to change until probably sometime in 2019 when Apple announces new iPhone models.

You can look at carrier deals if your friend is interested in a device payment plan, but the majority of the carrier deals I'm seeing are more for the XR, XS and XS Max. Best Buy occasionally will offer good carrier deals.

If purchasing outright, now would be fine but just buy directly from Apple. Either new or get an Apple refurbished iPhone 8. Apple refurbished devices are really nice and come with a 1 year warranty. It doesn't look like they have any iPhone 8's in stock at the time of this post, but keep checking since your friend doesn't need to buy immediately.

Go ahead and make the purchase. No real need to wait.

Thanks. So you don't see the price going down any further, correct ? They went from $800 to $600 as a natural consequence of the X coming out.

As the other person said, probably won't come down further till the next generation comes out (Sep 2019) ?

Great, thanks. That's what I thought. And that happens around Sep/Oct, right ?

Thanks. We are looking at BestBuy deals. We like shopping there.

Now is a good time to buy and the 8 is a superb device. The guy who bought mine was so happy with its pristine condition that he bought me dinner and drinks.

We still stay in touch which is nice.

Considering what the iPhone 8 offers with wireless charging, true tone, water resistance and stereo speakers, and it’s fairly discounted, It’s a decent buy since it was discounted after the fall keynote. I prefer the ‘Plus’ model, as it offers the larger battery, 1080 P display and dual camera.

I purchased the iPhone 8 from Apple during the Black Friday specials which gave me a 70.00 gift card but then I found one on FaceBook marketplace and managed to get a brand new one in the box for $550.00 so I bought that and then purchased AppleCare.

I was within the 14 days to return the other one to Apple so I saved almost $300.00 so there are deals out there and if you aren't in a hurry keep looking. Apple may have some deals for Boxing day and as others have said they 8 is an excellent phone.

I am in Canada so you probably can get a better deal in the US for one. Just make sure that the phone isn't blacklisted or stolen I was able to do that before I handed over the cash.

If you want to trade in your older phone, now might be a good time to do it. Apple will give me $250 for my 7+ toward an 8 or 8+ and $300 toward an X phone.

I may do the trade in tomorrow. Just not sure if 8/8+ or Xr. I’d like to go smaller but am not sure.

Thanks for the tip, but my friend's old phone is a piece of crap Samsung from 5 years ago (and it was the bottom of the barrel even then) :p

She will probably have to pay someone to take it :D

I think Apple will discontinue the 8 (and 7 of course) next year honestly, I’d do it now.

Why do you think they’re going to discontinue a phone released less than 1.5 years ago as of today? I think that is doubtful since it’s a big seller with great specs; it wouldn’t be a logical move.

Because I think Apple is going to recognize how horrible this year was for the iPhone, and I think they’re going to start streamlining the line a bit more. IF they offer it it’ll likely only be the 64GB model.

So they’ll fix their horrible year by getting rid of a great seller and form factor still preferred by many? Wasn’t this thing outselling the X at one point? Great idea!

Apple is trying to get everyone onto a X-type iPhone, like I said if the 8 continues I think it’ll only be in the 64GB variant, or they might finally put out a 128GB and discontinue the current two storage tiers. However, I think they would prefer to simplify their iPhone line a bit, it’s way too crowded right now. Hell, maybe they’ll give it a bump and we’ll finally have our iPhone 9.

Consider iPhone XR. It's a great device. It may save you money in the long-run.

Thanks, but it is really not necessary. Our decision to buy the 8 is quite deliberate, like the folks who go to a BMW dealership and look for last year's model. The 8 is a stellar phone, by most accounts, and it will more than serve my friend well.

My friend can barely figure out her Stone Age'd Samsung phone. Frankly, I'm a software engineer and I would (or could) never understand or even use half the features the 8 or even the 7 has :)

Way to crowded? Apple eliminated the iPhone SE and 6S from their line up in September, with the iPhone 7 being the entry level iPhone, followed by the 8, XR and XS. That’s hardly ‘crowded’.

He was simply giving a recommendation, frankly, nobody cares that you're a software engineer.
