AT&T grandfathered unlimited is best hands down. Great coverage, high throttle threshold, lower price than Verizon UDP (unless grandfathered pricing through contract until next year), and, if you play your cards right, tethering ;)

Edit: Verizon UDP price grandfathered through contract, $29.99 vs $49.99 new price

If AT&T catches you tethering unofficially they will remove the unlimited data plan. I did it before a few times but for very rare situations afraid I would get busted.

Very true, I've heard of the horror stories, people getting the letter or text. It is nice to have that option tho, for using sparingly.

Wait, so you guys probably heard MacRumors posted what Verizon announced earlier today which is an unlimited talk and text no contract plan with 5gb a month for only $50, and if you go over the 5GB you get reduced to 128kb speeds unlimited; if you dont use all your data, it can roll over one month. Not a bad deal for $50.

Would there be any other plan perhaps from tmobile or at&t that would allow me to just walk into their store and pop in their SIM card into my iPhone without breaking the bank and/or getting unlimited data?

PS: Tethering option would be great

No such thing. Complete b.s.

What T-Mobile has done is to nerf nearly all tethering so that download speeds are reduced dramatically. This has pissed me off, cause it not only effects new subscribers, but even true unlimited plans like mine that I've had for years!
Right now, I'm getting 32megabits per second dl speeds on my iPhone 7+ and tethering to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. The Tab S2 is only able to get 15mbps dl speeds, but many times it is 90% slower than my phone.
For those going to T-Mobile now, expect to get 512kbps!!!! That's about the same as AOL gave you a decade or more ago!

You could go to Sprint, but their coverage is worse than T-Mobile and they have caveats for tethering too. And simply forget about ATT and Verizon if you want to tether!
just wanted to point out that 512kbps is about 10 times faster than AOL dialup. Don't spread false info.

Question: For a HEAVY user (30-50GB monthly, so not insane but heavy), is the $25 T-Mobile upgrade package worth it if I don't tether (as in: at ALL)?

I'm done with AT&T, and T-Mobile seems like the logical jump, but I wanted to ask about real world pros/cons of the $25 "upgrade" vs. the plain old unlimited.

Is it really just video? How do they cap me to 480P? Just via bandwidth? It's not really precise info via T-Mobile lol... I use my phone almost exclusively for streaming video, so if $25 makes THAT much of a difference, it might be worth it.

Thoughts?

I'm in the same region as you. My grandfathered AT&T plan hasn't been throttled in years...

I use ~20 or go gb every month.

That's good.
It was a while back that i did get throttled not within a year or less.
They seemed to have cut down where before it was automatically as soon as you reached the preset soft cap no matter what the area or cell tower was congested or not you where getting slowed down.
The way they do it now makes more sense with network in mind and not just to piss off customers.

The old 3/5gb (HSPA/LTE plan) limit throttle was brutal.

Hi all,

So i've been with Verizon for years, i even had their old unlimited data plan but was forced to go off of it for using close to 30gb-70gb's a month.

I now have this 6S w/ me from Verizon, which is unlocked and im wanting to go to a different carrier such as Tmobile or Sprint or even ATT but need the unlimited data. Hell, if I could tether this unlimited data to my MBP that would solve a lot.

Any advice?

*edit: bear in mind my using 30gb-70gb's a month was all with my old iPhone 4 on 3G data

VERY strange. I have the elderly Verizon UDP and consistently use 100-200GB monthly and never have (had) a problem.

I switched to Cricket. Unlimited everything for $65 a month. Granted the download speeds are capped at about 10 megs down, but it's a true unlimited plan with no throttling.

tmobile is horrible. i wouldnt use their service if it was free.

I have awesome service and very fast data speeds with Tmobile and over 68 millions of other subscribers would also agree.
Tmobile growth has outpaced Verizon and AT&T combined last quarter.
What does that tell you? Keep paying those outrageous prices with the 2 big carriers thinking the money wasted on gimmicks and fees are worth it:D

Perhaps you're too young to remember dialup, but the jump from 56kbps to 512kbps was tremendous.
Sorry bud, but I had all of the following with my first x286 and 64bit PC's: cartridge style 100baud modems, 8mm tape drives, 8" floppies, CRT screens. Been using computers since the end of the 70's.

My point had nothing to do with actual speeds, and was a comparative statement. i.e. If someone told you a guy runs like a cheetah, would you correct him and say, 'No sir, you are wrong. Top speed of a cheetah is 62mph, while a man can barely reach 20mph.'
Don't be so anal retentive.

Yep, me too. But I know there are places were T-Mobile has spotty service. They are still regarding old 2g towers and expanding the 700mhz hardware, while upgrading towers to add 4xMIMO. By the end of 2017, when all new phones are able to use the new upgraded network, I think people will have a tough time complaining about T-Mobile service.

There is places that every carrier has issues and spotty service problem areas.
No carrier is perfect everywhere.
Just gotta find out what works best for your local area coverage and places one frequents the most ;)

I've been using T-mobile in Boston, North MA and South NH for the last couple of weeks. T-mo did a lot of work last 2-3 months. I can see less heavy congested spots (so far could find only 3-4). I can stream my 256 mb radio in my car with almost no interruptions (better than on att). Att is still better in term of penetration, average speeds, but they are getting slower with unlimited DTV plans and Cricket unlimited. I don't expect faster speeds with DTV Now unlimited video streaming.

I think now T-mobile has better quality/price ratio, but Att still best quality in the area.

This summer I had plenty of dropped calls on T-mobile, zero on Att. Now with B30 I have dropped calls on Att due to poor sites handshake and no interruptions on T-mobile. I reported the spot where I have dropped calls all the time to Att and their Hemisphere hang up on me. :)
