I believe it would work. The backlight would only come on when you press hard on the screen, and it doesn't have to come on at full brightness maybe ~1 nits. A certain phone maker already uses a less advanced 'knock knock' to wake the display so that's why I think it would work. Besides, if you're pressing/tapping the display, you'd want the backlight coming on anyway because you're either going to check notifications and/or unlock phone.. otherwise you wouldn't be pressing the display in the first place
There's nothing reading he pressure when the screen is off. And I don't think it's as simple as "flipping a switch" and making that happen. I don't think the concept is bad but I don't think the hardware supports it.

If you open Messages (not the window where you're in conversation with someone) but the list of contacts in Messages, tap on the circle where it displays the name/picture, you'll see there's a shortcut to mail them, FaceTime, message, or call.

If this was mentioned earlier, sorry for reposting!

I thought so to, but I started closing apps a couple days ago and got drastically better battery life. I think it has to do with Background App Refresh.

There are a few rogue apps that keep with the background activity despite you telling it not to. Facebook is one of them. I noticed their app BURNS through my battery on my 6s Plus when open. Not so much when it's closed.
