Laurie Anderson is an outstanding performer on the violin. Surprisingly, there are only few examples of her play on youtube. Here is one.

I think my favorite is Jimmy Page/Robert Plant album No Quarter from 1994. They had the London Metropolitan Orchestra and several other guest musicians backing them. The version of Kashmir on this album is absolutely amazing.

I'm a sucker for the rock/classical crossovers. I like the Aerosmith version of Dream On they did for the MTV VMAs one year with the strings. And, yes, I also actually like Metallica's S&M album they did with the San Francisco orchestra.

Yes! No Quater is a great album. The strings gives their music a fantasticly manic quality.

Yngwie Malmsteen actually did 3 albums with strings:

Fire and Ice, which included an orchestrial accompaniment on How Many Miles to Babylon.

He also worked with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in 1998, and did the entire thing live with the New Japan Philharmonic in 2000 (released as a DVD).

The Scorpions did their 25th anniversary album with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as well.

You also have Apocalyptica, who started out with their first album being all Metallica songs for a 4 string quartet.

Then, of course, there is Bond, though that's getting back to more classical.

BL.

there is an indian rock band called parikrama...they use violins and tabla(an indian percussion instrument) also...they are pretty good...here is one of their videos...sound quality isn't great but the song is awesome...hope you like it:)

^^ I was just gonna mention S&M..

Yngie also has performed with classical accompaniment. I'm not a fan of this style, but there it is.

Master of Puppets off of S&M -- without a doubt.
