Best way to connect HDDs to MBP

Is there any mention-able speed difference connecting external USB 3 HDD directly to MBPR vs using USB hub?

Can 2-10 years old 2-5 TB USB 3 HDDs used with USB hubs? Some drive makers tell not to use USB hubs at all.

Shouldn't be any speed difference but USB 3 hubs can be problematic unless they're of the powered type.

Use a POWERED USB hub.
Will save you a lot of trouble (sometimes the Mac can't supply enough USB bus power for more than one drive).
