Just got my Macbook Pro a few weeks ago.... so I am new to this world. I was wondering if there is a free program or an easy way to convert Flac files to MP3's for my iPod or iPhone?

I’ve used Switch in the past, but I think I’m going to give Max a try since it is open source

I guess this process degrades the quality?

Yes, you are going from lossless to lossy, but depending on the bitrate you choose for the mp3 it shouldn’t be anything noticeable. Plus you can’t going from lossy to lossy which is where you start to having a lot of quality loss

I use Xact. It is probably at bit more involved than maybe some of the others, but i like it.

You convert FLAC to AIFF, and then to MP3 via iTunes..

You may want to give XLD a try it works well allows you to edit the tags and also embeds album art if you want oh and since you are using this with Apple devices you may want to consider the Apple .m4a equivalent to .mp3, the MPEG-4 AAC output option.

I use xACT, it´s easy to use and free. And you don't need to export to AIFF first, xACT will manage FLAC to mp3 directly.
