You should be able to record both audio and video from your sources right in iMovie. I don't know if iMovie can apply real-time audio effects like GarageBand, but you can add effects during post.

I would also be making videos of me playing along to pre-recorded songs, so I'm sure if I'd be able to just take my bass sound and add effects, that is why I was thinking of going the Garage Band route and add it to the video recording. Should I still go the iMovie-only route?
 
I would record it all in iMovie (playing the track in iTunes, or whatever) and then import your video into Garageband to add effects to your track, and adding the backing track over your recording (it should match up if you play in time). Then you can export the video from Garageband. Should work!
