Hey all, due to the essentially linear depreciation curve of iPhones, I'm thinking of upgrading to the 14 Pro Max straight away and selling my current 13 Pro Max. Financially it makes a lot of sense, however there is one problem: I've never sold anything online before.

What do most people do? What would you consider to be the best way to do this? Ebay? I feel a little nervous about it, but excited to get into it too!

Thanks for any advice!

Don’t 😀 the 14 max won’t do anything different, but if you have money to burn i would sell on Facebook market place or gumtree with cash on pick up, eBay fees are nuts and the online company’s that buy iPhones don’t pay enough.

I’d like to see how it makes sense financially?
13 max 256 = $2019aud 14 max likely $2199aud 15 max $2399
All up $8,617 - say $$2400 back for selling 13 and 14
Spent $6,200 over 3 years instead of $2k if kept the 13 max.
so $1400 a year net cost for 3 years

I usually would avoid Ebay. Swappa is good. However, I don't use either because of either scam (ebay) or low-ball offer (Swappa). I just use a third party like buybackworlds.com or gazelle to trade in and get the money, at least I don't have to worry about getting low-ball offers.

Linear depreciation. Looking at the XS Max, 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max as examples back in 2021 September, what you'd see is each phone lost about $200 per year on their value. If it costs $200 per year to own the phone, you may as well sell as soon as the new one comes out.

so you can sell a 13 max now and only loose $200? nah, they have been $300 off new here

He's only talking about the base model, as the higher tier ones depreciate much faster. Appreciate your anecdotal experience but I don't think the guy is wrong because you found a good deal and "haha YouTube".

Your dreaming if you think someone will buy a year old iPhone no matter the GB for a few hundred off retail, won't happen.
30-40% off retail if you are lucky, not 10% lol.
The main company here who buy back iPhones are at 35% off retail now which will drop to 45% next week, even selling yourself would be similar now.
FB is flooded with 13 pro maxes for $500-600 off retail now

Sold my Factory Unlocked 13 Pro Max last week for 950$ had the box and cables and Apple receipt. My phone was mint. I've been doing this every year since the 3g, I pay about 300$ a year to have the latest iPhone.
Thanks for the input. How do you sell your phones if you don't mind my asking?

Real simple: swappa.com if you want top dollar. For reference here’s a screenshot of a few recently sold 13 Pro Maxs’ with Verizon selected as the carrier. Prices are USD

I'll trade it to T-Mobile or Apple. By the time eBay takes 10%, PayPal takes their 10% and you ship the thing insured with return receipt you are below what apple will give you for the trade.

I'm tempted to try declutter but the chance of getting screwed over what would be $300 isn't worth the risk.

That’s about $500aud which proves my point, also will be near a month before you get a 14, so really only getting 11 months out of a phone. In a month will tank even more.

I'm pretty frugal, and I think I do well with eBay when I regularly sell devices I know I'm done with. (Provide many clear photos, describe your item accurately. eBay fees exist, and shipping fees exist, but I think it's the best way overall at the moment.)

But time has persuaded me that financially, the best way to go is to keep devices I'm happy with unless upgrading is more of a need.

Another vote for Swappa. I’ve sold on eBay and in person, but Swappa is the best balance between price, ease of sale, and safety.

What price did you list it for?

You are clueless. A simple swappa search will prove you wrong.
