The good looking isight has been discontinued for some reasons. What type of webcam can we use for Macpro that is fully campatible with photobooth and ichat? or is Apple planning to release a new version of isight soon?

Thanks for the replys!

Did you guys happen to see the "isight-looking" web cam on Apple Cinema Display during WWDC presentation. Yeah, on the top of the display that Job was using during the presentation. Are those old firewire iSights?

I guess so. I haven't seen the keynote yet but was he not using his normal iMac with built in iSight?

Sorry, re-read your post - he was using an ACD

Yes, they've used those before. Pity they don't sell them any more.

jeez they are over $200. are they really that superior to other webcams? You can get good 3rd party ones for $100.

They all pretty much suck; even the one on my MBP. Is this external iSight any better?

The one I saw at $205 buy it Now is gone!!. People ask over $250 and up to $300 for this camera... I remember it used to cost $150

I believe you guys that this must be "the webCamera" but now it's an overpriced collectors item.

Cheers

2 cheapish USB options!

There is (at least) 2 USB webcam that works with Mac OS X and iChat without additional drivers. Confirmed is the Creatives webcam Live! Cam Optia and unconfirmed is the Microsoft Xbox Live Vision for the Xbox 360, both should work strait out of the box i Mac OS X (10.4.8).

So what's the deal with isight for the mac pro/mac mini? They not planning on ever having one again?

I guess everything else has it built in so maybe they are just planning on putting it in the cinema screens soon?

there is a program that you can use to get almost any usb cam to work with mac, it is called ichatusbcam

Do people not realize that any camcorder with firewire can easily be used as a webcam? I have been using a sony camcorder in place of the isight for yrs. Works way better too.

That was my plan (unless an opporuntiy to get an iSight came up), but does it have any limitations?

They should still sell them separately. Not everybody wants the cam stuck smack bang in the middle at the top of their display. Or wants to move the display to move the camera. For laptops and iMac's it's cool to include them there, but they should still sell a separate unit.

None at all, infact it is way better. Remote control zoom, record, better quaility video, tripod attachment fitting.

Macenforcer,
I couldn't find a single FW camcorder on Bestbuy or Circuitcity's page (didn't even looked at the expensive ones). What camcorder are we talking about, and what price range?

Thanks

Any camcorder with a firewire port. Most likely a tape based camcorder like a sony but they call it iLink. Look for sony with iLink.

edit: or look for IEEE 1394 interface. They all mean firewire.

Xbox Live Vision camera. $40, looks great with the Mac, works right out of the box, quality is just as good as the built in isights in the macbook.
