This thread is 2 years old... nice bump :p

So it is.

My Airport Extreme has been performing very well during those two years. It was an excellent buy.

I have it connected to a Draytek ADSL modem to get out to the internet. Which works just fine. It's just a bit of a shame that Apple don't make an Airport Extreme with a built-in ADSL modem.

Honestly....for most people the 5th gen airport should be plenty fast. Throw in the stability, and for the average consumer...you got a winner.

At least that is what I am gathering from this discussion.

Agreed. Mostly...

It's been almost 2 years to the day since I posted in this thread. This past Christmas, I decommissioned my trusty 3rd gen AEBS and got an Asus RT-AC66 which was rated number one over at smallnetbuilder in the AC1750 class at the time I bought it. I got close to 4 trouble free years out of my AEBS and the reason I replaced it was I wound up resetting it twice in one month rather than never thinking about it for years at a time.

Until December, I had been very happy with it. Back in the day, Apple routers were the only ones that didn't get befuddled on about a monthly basis with whatever Comcast is doing to them. The Asus has been just as stable. I got it because I wanted more flexible setup than is available in the latest Airport Utility that ships with Mavericks.

If flexibility isn't an issue, I still say go with Apple AEBS. If flexibility is important to you, by all means take a look at the routers over at smallnetbuilder before making your decision.

For me there were several issues. One was the ease of setting up Mac address filtering. The second was the ability to manage the router from an ordinary browser. The third was the ability to run third party firmware such as dd_wrt or tomato. Lastly the ease of setting up my own vpn was a consideration as well. Of course one down side was the revelation a month after I put the thing online that there was a huge back door left exposed by Asus. Thankfully I never use any vendor's third party software or their cloud crap so I wasn't exposed.
