They're holding this thing up. Because once you go black you never go back, that was a saying I used to hear from my grandpa.

I'd be disappointed with that, but at the same, if it becomes true, I won't be surprised either.
if it does come to that, we know its not a feature that really needs extra power from a new device, maybe they will let the current gen at least to have it. Oh well, we shall see :apple:

This would be the best new feature in iOS 10.

I can see where this is going. At the minute, the Night Shift button takes up a lot of room in Control Center. The iPhone 7 is going to have a True Tone display.

When iOS 10 is out in the Fall, that one button will become three; Night Shift, True Tone and Night Mode.

What I said!!! :)

It wasn't revealed because it looks ugly and unfinished. Will require much more work if it's ever released.

The only device that i care anymore is iphone. I use it everday for many hours. No other device comes close as far as usage time.
I no longer care about imac, minis, their laptop line or network gear - all of them are old and over priced and do not intent to replace any of them any time soon.
At least Samsung and few orhers keep tabs on cost of high end smartphones, so Apple cant just jack up the prices there like they do for the rest of their products.

I just don't understand why everyone seems to have such a hardon fora dark mode.

Apple made the UI so white. Everything is so bright... It is like staring at the sun.

Compare Whatsapp and Telegram background to iMessage. I dislike the black background with white/grey text. Useful if you're reading at night (in your bed). Great if you have an AMOLED display (consume less battery).

Best background to read is sepia (like the Reeder app). I just have no idea how a OS UI would be with that color. Old scroll skeumorphism?

As much as I want a dark mode I don't think these are signs of dark mode. The messages shot is possible if you take a screen shot before one of the new full screen animations starts. Safari private mode, and iTunes movie page are both dark already.

Every single computer needs updated with one exception, really.....MBP, MP, 4K iMac all are on old or very old processors....spinning hard drives are still everywhere, computers without USB 3.1, no TB 3 on "pro" line....they need a 5 hour keynote(of which at least 3 hours needs to be devoted to demoing a MP's new iMessage capabilities)

Two possibilities I can think of:
  1. Not ready in time, so it will come out in 10.1 or 10.2 as a beta this autumn.
  2. Perhaps if the iPhone 7 or 6SE or whatever it's called is getting an OLED display, Apple thought showing this off my show their hand for the next upgrade. They could potentially show it off at the iPhone event this autumn. But it would make sense to give developers access ahead of time to update their apps.
Lucky for me, the app I've designed at work is permanently in dark mode, haha. It fits in with our color scheme nicely. I've always wanted a dark mode. It's the first thing I do when setting up a new app is to look for a dark mode toggle. I just hope it's not tied to only using Night Shift when active. I want it on always, but providing an option to hook it up to the same schedule as Night Shift would be nice for some users.

It would be nice if Apple could provide hooks for mobile Safari so that we could put in an alternative override stylesheet for dark mode. It wouldn't take too long for me to whip up something since I use SASS variables for everything.

Both the iTunes dark mode and reader mode in safari are both available in iOS 9 already. This is nothing new!

By the time they bring this feature we will all be blinded by the light so it won't matter. Personally I'm tired of all the white.

I'm guessing this won't be announced until the iPhone 7 arrives, since it may be tied (exclusively, perhaps) to devices with an AMOLED screen. Not sure of the science behind it, but I believe it has something to do with battery life, and how easy/natural it is for AMOLED vs. LED to portray dark vs. light. (Someone with more display knowledge please chime in:)

iPhone 7 exclusive dark mode?

Why would that even be considered by anyone?
Your question is vague, so I'm not sure how to answer. Is "anyone" Apple, users who might choose to turn dark mode on, who?

If it's Apple, the answer is: battery life. AMOLED screens are supposedly More efficient at showing dark. (I think).
