I'm a photographer looking into the Mac Pro. The stock standard 320 looks big enough for my everyday work/apps etc, but I need a larger, 500 - 1tb drive in the machine for my storage. How competitively is the MP's 500gb (as a second hard drive) placed? are there any recommendations on better/cheaper drives from a third party supplier?

yes, any drive you pick up will be better/cheaper. there are so many threads on hard drives here.
