I just got the official iPad pro Smart Cover, but compared to the leather one I had on my iPad 3 it's poor quality and bad design. I'm going to take it back.
Since it only has three folds, there isn't one in the middle so I can't fold the cover over on itself properly behind the iPad.
With the old cover it could be folded so pretty much all the "felt" interior was folded over on itself.
With the new cover, there always some exposed interior part that can pick up grit and then rub it against the screen later :-(
Also the plastic/rubber feels cheap compared to the old leather ones.
Not to mention the lack of colors!

I wish I could just "embiggen" my old leather Project Red one ;-)

Is there any alternative?
I just want a nice magnetic cover for the front ONLY that has the sleep/wake feature.
Or a two piece case where I have the option to just use the front.

Suggestions appreciated!

I use a brand called CaseCrown

Have one for the mini 4, Air 2. It's a very good quality folder style with two viewing angles, soft lining for protection and comes in colors.

Amazon for only $15, it's almost too good to be true.

Roocase origami works perfect with iPad pro and has very good quality....very beautiful too so check it out....

I didn't see any PRO sized cases on the site, but the smaller ones look like they have the same issue as the Apple one: only three folding sections. Also front cover seems permanently attached to the back part.
Keep the suggestions coming :)

It's available only at Amazon and Walmart, but yea the front cover is attached to the back cover, but it's very easy to slip the iPad pro in and out and only takes several seconds of your time to do so.....the origami folds in more ways than apples smart case which is where it gets the name origami. I use this when my iPad pro is not attached to the smart keyboard for media purposes.

May I suggest giving the three-panel design a chance? It does work.

I actually tried it, the $60 Apple version, and it does work. It just doesn't work the way I want.
Number of panels isn't the issue, even two panels would be fine as long as it folds near the middle so that the soft side can be folded over on itself as not to pick up dust and dirt.

I'll keep looking, but in the meantime I'm going with the Waterfield Suede Jacket for simple scratch protection.

But none of the folding covers ever worked that way, even the four panel ones. Sure, the four panel ones could be folded so the leather side was on the outside, but they were unstable that way. To be stable they had to be folded with the soft side out.

Actually the Leather 4-panel Apple one worked perfectly (read: the way I wanted it to ;-) on my iPad 3.
I assume your stability comments refer to using it as stand? Personally I never use that feature, but I'm guessing that's why they changed it.

Oh, you don't use it as a stand? I had assumed that was what you were talking about when you talked about folding.

If you just want to fold up the cover while holding the iPad, I find that you can fold the Apple three panel cover that way. It's a bit thick, but it's doable.
