Careful with Swappa, I got screwed on a sale where I had pics prior to sending of an immaculate phone, the buyer scratched it up and I lost the appeal on PayPal and the buyer didn’t even have to send the phone back. Will never use them again.

Like with every bureaucracy, I'm betting the penny pinchers at the trade in place are pushing for more rejections due to the economy for reselling going into slow mode. Sad, really...

That’s kinda scary and probably very likely! I mean just yesterday I read a report pricing in UK would rise due to weaker value against the USA dollar. So I wouldn’t be surprised!

Sounds like that guy scammed you. Probably had a similar phone like the one he bought from you, and sent those pictures of his damage phone to PayPal to dispute. Trashy people man … sorry you had to go though that. Good no know, I won’t use swappa.
Most likely did exactly that to scam.

Swappa. Does that sound like a good business to be dealing in? Might as wel be the Crenshaw swap meet with snoop dog and Suge Knigbt in the early days! They size up your wallet truck rims and house value before you even open ya mouth!

This is why those "official" (outsourced) trade-ins can get away with low-balling the customers. Too many scammers out there and the lay people just don't want to deal with it. They'd rather get something than be scammed.

Best way to sell used phone is to do it locally so you can meet in person and both parties verified the item and transaction.
This, Swappa, is NOT an official store by any means.

Avoid them at all costs. Period!

I traded in on the spot at the Apple store and $250 got approved right away. My 12 mini was in very good condition, however.
But I wish I had not done that because I haven't been able to activate eSIM on my iPhone 14 pro and I am still without a cellular service. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I HATE eSIM.

Yes, I agree CashForYourMac.com is very reputable, and I have used them a few times also.

What's the return address on the box? It is probably addressed to Phobio. If you have a nearby Apple Store, just take it in and they will refund the payment method of the new device. (Have 14 days from the new device purchase to do an in-store trade in).
I have a box that is to go to Ai Carlisle as well. I wanted to just trade in at store and went there yesterday. The store was doing the trade as usual but when we got to the serial number of new phone it wouldn’t allow the in-store trade because I got instant trade credit on my Apple.com order for the mail in return.

I am being forced to trade it in by mail. i can cancel the trade in but they cannot tell me how that affects my monthly payments on the Apple Card and if then trading in at store would credit to the purchase the same way.

Crap because I have done this in the past with no problems. The issue is due to the instant credit I got, I think so anyway.

It started this year that you can’t trade in a phone tied to a mailed trade in. You can cancel the trade in but you will be charged the full trade in value that is not subjected to the installment. I was told by the rep that last year there were confusion where users trade in the phone in store got the trade in value to their payment method and then get charged for it after the deadline to mail in the device has passed. It would take a few days after canceling the trade in before you can trade in the store and the rep can tie it to new iPhone to get full trade in value. So for future order, don’t select the trade in if you plan to trade in store.

What I don't understand is how the storage doesn't factor into the trade in value at all. You can have a 1tb iphone and it will trade in for the same value as 128.
I agree and when you buy them they gouge you hard. So you are getting ripped double

It actually does factor into the trade value in some countries. In Canada, for example, a 13 Pro is worth $740 CAD to $845 CAD depending on storage size. The same phone in the U.S. is worth $600 (or around $804 CAD at current exchange rate) regardless of storage size. In this example, it looks like the U.S. trade value is slightly above the midpoint between low and high in Canada.

It will charge your payment method the full trade in value. It won’t change your monthly payments. I had this happen last year with a laptop. I saw it was Phobio and cancelled the trade in. I was charged the $800 on my payment method. I then took it to the Apple Store and received an $800 refund when I traded the device in.

Oh, ok. So the in-store trade basically reversed the trade in charge you received? They really need to give a choice on where to take it for trade in for online orders.

Just contacted them and canceled mail in trade in. Worked just as you said, they charged my payment for the amount of the initial trade credit.

Thanks for letting me know how it worked.

Now to trade in at store tomorrow.

Make sure to bring the receipt or new product box so they can scan it and tie it to the order. Otherwise it will be a gift card.

Guys, how do I make sure to get a refund and not a gift card when doing in-store trade-in?

I paid full price for iPhone 14 and requested a mail-in trade-in kit during the pre-order.

I know for a fact that Apple issues refunds for trade-ins only if buying a new product. If you're not buying a new product, they issue a gift card instead.

When I go into a store to trade in my old iPhone, I won't be buying anything new because I've already bought the new iPhone. So, how do I make sure I get a refund instead of a gift card?

Thanks.

Bring your receipt and/or new product box. They will tie it to the order. You must do this within 14 days otherwise it "expires". If you ordered the device on pre-order day, I would try to do it no later than Friday as they may use the 9th as the 14 day starting point.

Mine is going to Elk Grove, CA this year. This is my 4th trade with Apple and have never had issues. They always give me the estimated amount and the transaction has been quick for the most part. I read these threads every year where someone has an issue with a trade rejection and it always worries me.

Mine is supposed to be received tomorrow and I should hear something by the beginning of next week. I will post back with my results good or bad.

I have often wondered if the folks sending them in are being honest with the condition of their phones. Mine are always in "like new" condition with zero defects and zero scratches. I take pictures of my phones back and front and in the trade-in box before I seal it. Then the box after it's sealed.

Unless you're selling it yourself to someone in person or an online place like Swappa you'll always lose out if you bought anything higher than the base model. The trade-in companies (Resellers) make their bank off the higher storage models that get traded in.

My iMac trade in value went from $100 to nothing, which seemed unfair but I wasn't in a position to do much about it so I let it go.

I pre-ordered my 14 Pro and got it on launch day (16th) and did a trade in for my 13 Pro. Like many others, I got an email on the pre order stating I could either use the trade in kit or take it to a store. I received the trade in kit yesterday but thought I would try going to the Apple Store to see if I could just trade it in there.

They tried to do the trade in, but since I had already opted in for the trade in kit, it wouldn't let them complete the transaction. I wasn't given any option about in store or kit when I completed the transaction on pre order day and I had to have the phone delivered to my residence as I was not going to be able to do an in store pickup.

So, I think the net of it is this - If I had opted for in store pickup, I think they could have taken the trade in when I picked up the device. Since I did a delivery to my home address, they cannot override the mail in trade.

I'm late to this thread and didn't think about cancelling the mail in trade.....so, my 13 Pro is on the way to the trade in partner (Jeffersonville IN) so we'll see how that goes. Worst case, if they try to rip me off, I'll just reject the offer and have my 13 Pro sent back to me.....

Well I received my refund for my trade earlier than expected and exactly what they quoted. Everything went flawlessly as it usually does. No issues at all. I received $430 for my 2 year old 12Pro.

I love Swappa in practice and have never had any real issues with them, but it's also so easy to get screwed out of money if you want to get paid in a reasonable amount of time. Unless you want them to send you a paper check (which is what I do now), you get nailed with all kinds of crazy fees. You can lose like $150 extra in nonsense fees if you don't watch what boxes you're checking during the transaction. And they are absolutely not forgiving about it if you complain. In fact, they're downright rude in their emails.

I traded my iPhone 13 Pro in via mail (Monday) through Apple and received the expected $600 last night. My phone was in excellent condition so I didn’t except any issues. Good luck to all.
