Hi Guys,

I just wanted to heads up the community about my poor buying experience from Adorama. Take it with a pinch of salt as YMMV. I bought one of Black Friday $1900 2.9Ghz Late 2016 15" MBP 16GB/256/Radeon 460 and my order got cancelled without prior notification and out of the sudden by the verification department.

I thought well, it must be an issue with the shipping and billing addresses, nothing to worry about. Must be pending and not cancelled. But was indeed cancelled! I was not reached over my phone, nor the voicemail or contacted in any way to verify my information. I never had such an experience like this.

When calling them, i verified that both my shipping & billing address were correct. They explained to me that the reason for cancellation didn't have anything to do with ship & bill error but due to my IP address being outside of the United States (!) I use a VPN a lot and didn't know an online retailer could have those restrictions.

I reached there department first hour in Saturday morning as they were already closing on Friday by the time i got the cancellation notification. On Saturday the MBP was already sold out and as you bet i was not honored my initial order intention. I tried and tried by speaking to all departments but there was not a person able to resolve my issue. It was not my fault, that i didn't know something so obscure or deep that even my IP address could knock my order.

The thing that i find most surprising is that it was knocked without anesthesia, at the instant.- no prior heads up, question or anything. Please take into account my experience.

On one hand, I can understand why they cancelled the order but I don't understand why you were not notified right after the cancellation.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for vendors to cancel an order without notifying the buyer.

Just a little heads up: "Hey!... your order has a problem... we are calling or reaching you by email that something is missing, or an additional feedback is required to proceed with your order" is sort of the stuff i was looking forward to, and it would have gone a long way if they had given me time to react and try to work with them what was going on.

It was my first time buying with them.

I guess the sale was flagged as being "fraudulent" due the VPN and, as such, they did not attempt to complete the sale by contacting the buyer.

I could see the company contacting the cc company but not the "fraudster" which, in this case, was not fraudulent at all.

This is pretty normal. I worked at an e-commerce retailer for a number of years, and for a USA retailer of high value items depending on the type of merchandise a foreign IP address is a red flag most of the time. The last thing they are going to do is engage someone suspected of fraud, it's just how it is.

B&H in New York has a better deal on that same MacBook Pro and it comes better equipped. $1899.00 and free shipping. Oh, and turn off your VPN before you order.

But is not the exact same one, the one on sale is the 2GB Radeon.
Need the 4GB Video absolutely. 4GB video is the minimum system requirement for the program i'm going to run (Flame)

If not i would have gone for a 13" MBP or cheaper 15" on deals, but have specific requirements.

You should probably check your spam/trash to see if the notification went there. Also bear in mind that it was Black Friday and Adorama will have been handling around 4 or 5 times the normal amount of orders as on usual Friday.

No i really checked but nothing went there. Ah... guys i really want to thank Helen, she was the most proactive and engaged Adorama staff about my issue. Even though they have/could not be able to resolve it. I have to admit Helen was very kind on her detailed email reply and i thank you for taking your time, specially at the hour i received a response.

Sounds like they have been burned before.

Most retailers would flag a transaction that big originating from a foreign IP as fraudulent . It's not just them.

There have been times when I have had issues with smaller transactions going through. I remember trying to buy something from Nike some time back while sitting in an airport lounge at HKG and it just wouldnt go through.

I've had issues with VPN purchases as well. However, the vendors have notified me (and, in return, I either verified the information or resubmitted the purchase.) But, this was not on the busiest sales day of the year! My experiences with Adorama have always been great.

They should have notified you, but my guess is that they were simply so insanely busy they did not get around to it. Having worked in retail, I can say first hand that there are sometimes things that should be done but don't get done due to insufficient staffing, and Black Friday (and the weekend that follows) is a day where this is common simply because there are so many things asked of individual employees that it is pure sensory overload. Black Friday is the day that makes you want to bash your head against the wall and drink a quart of gasoline in the hopes that you lose all of your sensory perceptions. This was nothing personal against you.

My thought is if you give them a (pleasant) call on less peak hours that hopefully you can work out something where they can either scrounge you up another one of the models that might be sitting in a corner somewhere or work something out of mutual agreement. (I am guessing you already know this, but a call/visit from an angry customer who expects something right off the bat usually doesn't end in a happy resolution for any involved party!)

When my ID was stolen, someone ordered a high-end system from B&H for delivery to Indonesia. Luckily for me, they flagged the order as suspicious and happily canceled once I called them and provided proof I was the actual card holder.

You need to remember, sites like Adorama are normally left on the hook for fraudulent sales if they don’t collect a physical signature. It’s why they need to be vigilant.

I do not think it's having a foreign to the USA IP address but that it miss matched with your CC billing address country

I have bought from Adorama overseas several times with no issues
