I used to be able to charge my iPhone 7 Plus more than twice using my Anker Astro powerbank. My 11 Pro Max, on the other hand, sucks the whole thing down almost completely with one charge during this test I just did.

Not only do the new phones have far larger batteries than before, but they draw more current charging, too; the powerbank and phone both got very warm during charging, much warmer than my 7 Plus used to. This might be a problem if you shove them both in your pocket.

So if you're a heavy user who relies on powerbanks, you may have to upgrade them. Battery life is a lot better so you may not have to rely on them as much, but I know people who burn power like crazy when traveling and also Pokemon Go players.

Interesting report, thank you. I wonder if this is an issue caused by non-support or partial support of the USB PD charging specs, resulting in charging at a higher than optimal voltage?

I don't think it uses PD, I just think the 11 Pro Max pulls more amps for longer.

When using my USB current tester, my 7 Plus would pull about 1.2 to 1.4 amps at 5V (6-7 watts) at the start of the charge. My 11 Pro Max pulls a solid 2 amps (10 watts) all the way up to 60% or so.

For me, the Anker power bank not charge any more !

Good thing that even 10000mAh powerbanks are quite affordable nowadays. They even make powerbanks with Qi wireless charging support so you can just put the phone on top of the powerbank to charge it.

Interesting (again). I would have thought that wireless charging would be about the last way you'd want to use what's basically a large battery to charge another battery because it's relatively quiet inefficient.

It’s more about convenience, using power bank without the wires.
