Here are the power draw numbers for the current cards...

Graphics card Video SDRAM Power usage

Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB (GDDR2) 32 W

ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB (GDDR3) 132 W

Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 512 MB (GDDR3) 110 W

peak power is 180W to be safe but i read the normal power it really takes is around 145W during gameplay

"According to Nvidia, at peak usage, the 8800 GTX draws about 180W. At normal, heavy use (during gameplay, for example) power draw is about 145W. Idle power is well down in the range of the 7900 GTX's idle power draw."

I am very impressed and rather content.
I am happy that my upcoming Mac Pro is still future proof, and will handle (Apparently) DX10 Cards well (Although, we have yet to test the R600)

Hi everybody,

I am new to this forum I am also very interested about upgrading my Mac Pro with a nvidia 8800.

I found this link about an expansion slot utility but I can't find it at the indicated location.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304122

I am quiet new on os x so I might miss something basic here.

Anyway I thought this might help regarding an eariler discussion that came up about the slots

simply click on macintosh hd. (not in your users folder)

Then click on the 'system' folder
Then click on the 'library' folder
Then click on the 'core services' folder (should have an X on it)
Then Expansion Slot Utility should be listed with a generic Application icon. Double click on it to load the utility...

Thanks, I looked inside that folder and I do not have that utility ... Is there a way to additional install it ?

not sure if you can install that seperately
but i jsut looked for it and it's there.. pretty cool didn't know you can acess it like that

so i got my BFG 8800 GTX today! woot woot!
here are some pics....

comparison to the Apple 7300 stock vid card for the mac pro!

i'm still waiting for my order from welovemacs.com for the power cables but for now it have it hooked up the ghetto way all being powered up from the 2 cd drive power

ive tried to get OSx going but like wgrooves with no success .. ive updated my firmware to the newest one.. and still no go...
ive tried leaving the 7300 in there the system wont' boot up.. so the only way is swapping the card out to run osx..
i'll update when i get my powercables form welovemacs.. and see if that changes anything,,,

but i'm VERY happy with this card! omg the power! hahaha
it's not that noisy for thoes of you that curious.. the card is HUGE! as you can tell form the pics
also i did some benchmarks
i have a 3ghz mac pro with 2gb of ram.. 3dmark06 score of about 12k!
i got i think around 2-3k with the 7300!!

The artwork on the card's heat/RF shield is pretty cool - presumably depicting a person who has tried to get the card to work under OS X but only been able to pull out all his hair.

Im very impressed Angion-
Do by any chance have any games lying about ? You think you could try out a game or three, like BF2, CS:S, or anything along those lines if its not too much trouble ?

ive tried out..tombraider lengends.. BF2142.. ghost reacon advance warfare.. oblivion.. nfs carbon.. all work perfectly.. all at 1900x1200 or whatever max rez i can get at full max out settings...all work flawlessly with no lag whatsoever

ive been trying to get splinter cell double agent to work thought
but unfortunetly theres a bug or soemthing if you have a 8800 running that game casue i get all messed up geometry and textures are all flickering and artifacting
so jsut waiting for it for them to come out with a patch

and can't wait for hellgate london to come out as it's one of the first DX10 game to come out!

Hey grats buddy, glad you got it to work out. I knew you would like it.

Drivers, drivers, drivers. If Apple releases 8800 drivers (and a card, obviously, otherwise no reason for them to develop drivers) my G5 will be replaced sooner than planned. :D

;)

Excellent.
Wow-
its nice to see that the 8800 really is All that

Now, we just have to wait either for the 8900GTX or the highly elusive R600.

yea theres always one newer coming out bigger and better
but right now i'm pretty happy with it i did push the card thought to the max

playing Fear extraction point
with everything at max and rez at max

went into this chruch with like 10 guards so i decide to throw 5 grenades in there and blew everything up while shooting everyone
with all the particles and wood benches breaking apart and the cement pilar breaking also and bullets flying with bullet shells flying out of my gun

it finially lagged a tiny bit! haha

hi aiongiant,

im really impressed by your modification. For my study research i`m interested in PCIe readback/download performance with this hardware setup. If it's possible you could bench it for me with the tests from Stanford http://graphics.stanford.edu/projects/gpubench/. Just download the binaries and start the test for readback and download from the cmd in Win XP.

This would be a great help for me.

Thanx

Nic

not sure if i did it right?

Thanks for awnsering so quick. You have done it right, the values you have posted is the readback performance (data transfer GPU->RAM) of the 8800. For
Fixed Hostmem GL_BGRA Mpix/sec: 261.71 MB/sec: 998.33
Float Hostmem GL_RGBA Mpix/sec: 68.39 MB/sec: 1043.47
the card performs well, but the other values are a little dissapointing (and irrelevant :) ).

Maybe you can post the benchmark for the "download" (transfer RAM->GPU) test too.

Nevertheless THANK YOU for posting, it is a great help.

Nic

heres the stuff for the "download"

(* Download Bandwidth *)
(* GeForce 8800 GTX/PCI/SSE2 *)
(* MB MB/sec *)
(* 512 x 512 *)
4.00 809.91

dunno if thats good or not hehe

as for the results maybe it's not performing as well as a actual pc? no idea nothing to compare it to

good news, the system seems to be really comparable. I do not know how actual nForce 680i Chipsetsystems perform, but the speed is like it should be. Good news :)
