They seriously need to start the articles with the cost of these outrageously priced items. Then I don't need to waste my time ooh-ing and ahh-ing at this stuff

No doubt. I read the entire thing thinking how cool this fan sounded. I then get to the $1,000+ price tag and laughed. I would never, ever spend that.

I'm all for making things "Smart" but at a reasonable price. In the fervor to tell us how great the "Internet of Things" revolution is going to be writers, deathly afraid of the unemployment line, are lining up in droves to tell us how many Billions of dollars the IoT market will generate. They are forgetting one thing. Just because you makes something "Smart" doesn't mean i'm going to pay 4X the Retail cost.

I'm a "fan" of Big Ass Fans but I new they were really expensive before the "Smartification" of their product. For now I'm not their target client.

Many of these startups coming out with low utility "Smart" products are going to die. There's a bubble being created. IoT isn't going to go mainstream until products that are "Smart" are roughly 25-50% premium priced over their non smart products.

WAY overpriced.... laughably so!

The people with the snarky comments about these guys adopting Apple's pricing aren't even anywhere near the mark!

This is a ceiling fan, people..... It's a very simple machine with a motor and a variable resistor to control the motor speed inside. Sure -- they're adding a new circuit board and a bit of technology so it can become "smart" and interface with an iOS device. But even in a world of 100%+ price markup, that still doesn't justify more than an additional $50-75 or so.

I really do like the concept. I had ceiling fans installed in all of the bedrooms at my old house and will likely do the same again with our new one. But the *main* justification for doing so is energy/cost savings. (You can run them in reverse in the winter to keep warm air circulating efficiently too, so it doesn't all just rise to the ceiling as it comes out of your heating ducts.)

Hardly any way to imagine a $1,000 ceiling fan (plus installation costs) will pay for itself in energy savings!

I couldn't believe the price and thought maybe I was in some parallel universe. Reassured that most others feel the same way.

Full marks for developing the logic and circuit boards to control a spinning bit of metal, but seriously that can't be much more than a couple of weeks with two guys in the corner. It seems the company wants to recover the development costs out of the first couple of dozen fans sold.

Translated "Available in the fall"

I thought this was pretty cool and would've loved to give it a shot, but at $1k. No way. $150 maybe. $1000 ceiling fan is silly.

Not only is this a little pricey for what it does but not available until the fall after all the hot weather is a memory. Poor marketing, would you say. I must say that it is a very attractive design for a household fan considering the majority of house ceiling fans seem to be right out of "Casablanca".

The fan was expensive BEFORE the smart tech was added! Around $900 or so for the dumb version. A premium product with a premium price.

A Hyundai can get you from point A to point B just as well as a Tesla Model S but the price (and user experience) will be very different.

I'm having air conditioning installed in my home right now and I could have bought three of these for the same price.

"The ceiling fan is composed of a durable bamboo material and boasts an array of sensors that automate a number of tasks, such as adjusting fan speed and powering the fan on and off."

Wow! It has so many options all my current ceiling fans could only ever dream of! I'll take 4!

Aesthetically it's a nice design. And I'm a huge fan of "smart" products. But this is just way too much money for something that doesn't really need to be "smart" in the first place. Remember the smart slow cooker a few months back? I honestly think that is a much better idea with a much better cost/usefulness ratio.

Out of curiosity, does it make any difference to you to note that the smart version is only $150 more than the dumb Haiku fan? It's not expensive because it's smart... It's expensive because it's a luxury fan.

Still too rich For many people, I suspect, however.

That's a good point. Until the words "luxury fan" happened. I wouldn't pay that much for a fan, ever. For that price you could buy fans for your whole house with change to spare, or you'd even be well on your way to central air (which can easily be made "smart" for cheap). It looks nice, but I don't think I'm the type of person who would notice the difference between a ceiling fans cooling power and a luxury ceiling fans cooling power.

So yeah maybe it's me. I don't appreciate some of the finer things I guess. I waste money on all kinds of stuff, but even I just don't get this one.

ITT: "If I can't afford it, it must be stupid" and "If it costs more than my fan, it costs too much"

LOL I saw the headline and thought cool.

::scans to bottom of article to see price:: $95? Cool. I want one. Oh wait, what's this the sentence before... $1000?! Ahh geez.

For $1000 you'd think there wouldn't need to be any extra cost options.

In all seriousness, it does seem pretty cool and may be more cost efficient long term. If I owned and wasn't renting, I would consider it alongside other energy efficient cooling methods.

I notice Haiku has adopted Apple's pricing strategy. ;)

These fans has Big Ass prices before these models. I'm constantly ad-targeted by them, not sure why, but their margins must be high enough to pay Google the big $$$.

Keep in mind that is a 14 foot fan. Not exactly in the same category as the 4'6" Hunter I installed in the bedroom on Monday.

But yeah, I have no reason to go away from the ~$100 Hunters.

But even the 7' fan is 2,600 bucks! They don't carry the 'Smart Fan', but the cheapest 'Big Ass Priced' fan Home Despot carries is this one, at $1,500.00!

I thought those fans were expensive, but the one I have isn't all that cheap though either. Granted, I didn't pay nearly this price (I hope) but...

It IS a nice fan...

That happens all the time to me, the targeted ads. Lasts for weeks, or until I search for something different...

It's a great concept, but the price needs to be cut at least in half if not more before it's even remotely practical for most anyone.

Still, the ISIS fan looks interesting. Odd website thought. There isn't any information on where to find these gems...

EDIT: Home Despot apparently sells them. Check out the price of that one!

Golly. Like an inverted helicopter.

Scroll down the page a little to see the "Customers who viewed this item also purchased…" and it pretty much sums up the majority sentiment in this thread. The $3500 fan is exciting, but most people are happy to live with fans under $100.

(We have three big box home improvement chains in our area -- Home Desparate, gOSH, and bLowes :p )

Which as crazy as having a smart pencil eraser, or smart headboard for your bed. I'm all for nice things and have a nice income myself, but this one is a little crazy.

Am I really the first one to think of this?

The emperor fan:
a dynasty blown away
by costing dissent.

Intelligent air!
Be joyous in reception
copious in cash

Haiku simplify:
the airflow dynamics which
cause great turbulence
