I'm not sure how many have seen this before but I thought it was a pretty big eye opener, photos of a 600mm f/4 lens being retrieved from a crocodile infested swamp. Apparently, the guy was shooting from a bridge, with the 600 on a monopod with a 2x. The head snapped, with the lens hitting the concrete bridge, then rolling off, straight into the water!

No. It was owned by lensrentals I believe, and it was insured so they just called it a day. I remember reading about this on FM or POTN.

edit: It was borrowlenses, not lensrentals, and
"The lens came back from Canon. It is dead. There is so much gunk and mold inside, they declared it beyond economical cost of repair. We are now talking to all the insurance people involved, and hopefully the destruction party or charitable giveaway will happen some time soon. Stay tuned."

Every day, heck every hour, someone screws up and does $7K worth of damage in an auto accident. How is this different. I'm surprised they fished it out. The last couple lenses and cameras I saw hit the water were not economically repairable. (I think I seen four get wet.)

Jim Brandenburg once fell in a lake with his 600mm setup. He just called up Canon and they overnighted him a new one! Sometimes it pays to be the best of the best....
